Front Wheel, Bearing and Duo-Cone Seal - Remove

Start By:

  1. Remove the front wheel and brake

  1. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Front Wheel Oil - Change" for the correct draining and filling procedures.

  2. Remove bolts (1) and cover assembly (2).

  3. Remove O-ring seal (3).

  4. Remove bolts (4), plate (5), and cover (6) from cover assembly (2).

  5. Remove O-ring seals (7) from cover assembly (2).

  6. Remove target sensor assembly (8) from cover assembly (2).

  7. Remove O-ring seal (9) from target sensor assembly (8).

  8. Remove bolts (10). Use two people or a suitable lifting device to remove retainer assembly (11). The weight of retainer (11) is approximately 30 kg (66 lb). Remove shims (12).

  9. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to remove wheel assembly (14) and bearing cone (13). The weight of wheel assembly (14) is approximately 1194 kg (2632 lb).

  10. Remove O-ring seal (15) from retainer assembly (11).

  11. Remove bolts (16) and remove speed sensor assembly (17) from retainer assembly (11).

  12. Disconnect harness assembly (18) and remove O-ring seal (19) from speed sensor assembly (17).

  13. Remove bolts (20) to remove receptacle (21) from speed sensor assembly (17).

  14. Remove bearing cup (22).

  15. Remove Duo - Cone seals (23). Remove bearing cup (24).

  16. Remove Duo - Cone seals (25).

    Note: The inner Duo - Cone seal can be removed after the service brake is removed for easier access.

  17. Install Tooling (C) at three equally spaced locations onto service brake assembly (26). The weight of service brake assembly (26) is approximately 1581 kg (3486 lb).

    Note: The bolt of Tooling (C) must be cut to a length of 90 mm (3.5 inch)

  18. Remove 40 nuts (27) and 10 nuts (28).

  19. Remove service brake (26) from the wheel spindle.

  20. Remove O-ring seal (29) from service brake (26).

  21. Raise the temperature of bearing cone (30), rapidly and evenly, to 42° C (75° F) above ambient temperature. Use Tooling (B) to remove bearing cone (30). The weight of bearing cone (30) is approximately 67 kg (148 lb).

  22. Remove bolts (31). Install Tooling (D) at two locations that are 180° apart. Use Tooling (D) and a suitable lifting device to remove retainer (32). The weight of retainer (32) is approximately 53 kg (117 lb).

  23. Remove O-ring seal (33) from retainer (32).
