Quick Coupler Pressure - Test and Adjust

Usage:

962M EJB

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.

Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE

When the compensator is rebuilt, make sure that the pressure compensator adjustment is backed out to a low pressure setting before the engine is started. Otherwise, severe pump and system damage can result.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Steering Frame Lock in the LOCKED Position

  1. Move steering frame lock to the LOCKED position.

  2. Turn off machine. Release system pressure to machine.

Test Procedure

(1) Quick coupler pressure tap.

  1. Attach a 34450 kPa (5000 psi) gauge to the quick coupler pressure tap located on the quick coupler valve on the inside left wall of the non-engine end frame as shown in Illustration 3.

  2. Start the engine and warm up the hydraulics if necessary. The hydraulic oil temperature should be at least 60° C (140° F).

  3. This pressure can be taken at high Idle or low idle, there should be no difference in pressure.

    (2) Quick coupler switch

  4. Actuate the quick coupler using the coupler switch (2) located to the right of the operator inside the cab. The quick coupler will then attempt to actuate for a few seconds. Do not actuate any other function while checking the quick coupler. While the quick coupler is being actuated, check the quick coupler pressure.

  5. The pressure should be 15500 ± 700 kPa (2248 ± 100 psi).

  6. If pressure is within specifications, shut off the machine and remove gauges. See next section if adjustment is needed.

Adjustment Procedure

(3) Quick coupler pressure reducing valve
(4) Locknut

  1. Locate the Quick coupler pressure reducing valve PRV located on the inside left wall of the non-engine end frame as shown in Illustration 5.

  2. Use a hex wrench to loosen the locknut (4) and an internal hex to adjust the pilot pressure (3). Turn the adjuster screw clockwise in order to increase the pressure setting. Turn the adjuster screw counterclockwise in order to decrease the pressure setting.

Note: The last movement should be clockwise before securing the locknut.

  3. Tighten the locknut (4) to 17 ± 3 N·m (150 ± 27 lb in).

  4. Turn off the machine, release the pressure to the hydraulics to disconnect the pressure gauges.
