Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking. When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear of the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a component. Install blocks or stands before performance of any work under a heavy component. Approximate weights of the components are shown. Clean all surfaces where parts are to be installed. |

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products. Tighten four of bolts (3) evenly in order to break the seal between differential housing (2) and axle housing (4). Continue to withdraw differential housing (2) out of axle housing (4) until there is a gap of approximately
10 mm (0.4 inch) before allowing the differential to be supported by Tooling (A). Remove two of bolts (4) from the top of differential housing (2).Show/hide tableIllustration 5 g01198539 - Install a suitable bar across the frame rails of the chassis in order to support differential housing (2). Install Tooling (B) into the two threaded holes in the top of differential housing (2). Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (B) and the support bar. Carefully remove differential (2) from axle housing (4) and Tooling (A). The weight of differential housing (2) is approximately
280 kg (617 lb) . - Carefully lower differential housing (2) onto a suitable pallet fork and remove differential housing (2) from the machine.
- Install differential and bevel gear (center) in the reverse order of removal.
- Apply Tooling (C) to the contact surface of the axle housing.
- Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of
270 ± 40 N·m (200 ± 30 lb ft) .
