When reporting the repair, use "PI32667" as the Part Number and "7751" as the Group Number, "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and "T" as the SIMS Description code. Exception: If the repair is done after failure, use "PI32667" as the Part Number, "7751" as the Group Number, "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code, and "Z" as the SIMS Description Code. |

PROBLEM
The alternator wiring needs to be inspected on certain C12.9 Marine Engines equipped with a 24 volt 160 amp alternator. The existing wiring may be installed incorrectly and can damage the alternator. |

ACTION REQUIRED
Inspect the battery cable connections between: 1. Terminal Block Batt (-) to Alternator (GND), and 2. Terminal Block Batt (+) to Alternator (+), reference the Image 1 below. 3. If alternator connections are correct, no additional action is required. 4. If alternator connections are not correct and the engine has not been connected to battery, rework the cables by disconnecting the cables from the alternator and connecting them to the correct terminals, as shown in Image 1. 5. If alternator connections are not correct and the engine has been connected to battery, replace the alternator and properly re-connect the battery cables as shown in Image 1 following the steps a through j: a. Assure engine is stopped and properly locked out and tagged out to prohibit unintended operation. b. Remove belt guard using care to ensure all fasteners are retained. c. Remove battery B- cable from its 482-9519 terminal block. d. Remove battery B+ cable from its 482-9519 terminal block. e. Replace alternator and connect B+ and B- cables to alternator as shown and described in Image 1. f. Replace belt guard ensuring all fasteners are reinstalled. g. Connect battery B+ cable to its 482-9519 terminal block. h. Connect battery B- cable to its 482-9519 terminal block. i. Remove all lock out tag out devices. j. Test for proper operation. |

If the alternator is replaced, per the Action Required, an additional 0.5 hour is allowed. On vessels with multiple affected engines this service letter should completed on all engines on the vessel on the same trip. Please reference the other engine serial numbers in the claim story. |
