Usage:

994K MM9

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from a fire.

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.

Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.

Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE

Do not fill fuel filters with fuel before installing them. The fuel will not be filtered and could be contaminated. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts. The fuel system should be primed prior to starting the engine.

(4) Drain hose connector

  1. Open lower grill assembly (1) on the left-hand side of the machine. The fuel system water separator is mounted in this compartment.

  2. Close both fuel supply shutoff valves (2) that are located on either side of the fuel system water separator.

  3. The drain hose from the water separator extends down through the rear bumper of the machine. Place a suitable container under the open end of the drain hose.

  4. Open drain valve (3) on the bottom of the water separator. Be careful that drain hose connector (4) remains attached to the drain valve. Allow the fluids in the water separator to drain into the suitable container.

  5. Properly dispose of the drained fluids.

  6. Close the drain valve, and carefully remove the drain hose connector that is attached to the drain valve. The drain hose will remain coupled on the connector.

  7. Move the drain hose connector and the drain hose aside while the water separator is being replaced. These components will be installed on the new water separator.

  8. Use a Cat strap type wrench in order to remove the water separator. Properly dispose of the used water separator.

  9. Clean the water separator mounting base. Make certain that none of the old seal material remains on the base.

  10. Apply a thin coating of clean diesel fuel to the seal on the new water separator.

  11. Install the new water separator by hand until the seal of the water separator contacts the mounting base. Continue to tighten the water separator one additional full turn after the seal contacts the mounting base.

Note: You may need to use a Cat strap type wrench, or another suitable tool, in order to turn the water separator to the amount that is required for final installation. Make sure that the installation tool does not damage the water separator.

  12. Check that the drain valve on the bottom of the water separator is closed hand tight. Install the drain hose connector and the drain hose that were removed in step 6.

  13. Open both fuel supply shutoff valves that were closed in step 2.

  14. Prime the fuel system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for more information.

  15. Close the lower grill assembly.
