Fuel System - Prime

Usage:

994K MM9

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death may result from failure to adhere to the following procedures.

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.

Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.

Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.

Prime the fuel system in order to purge trapped air in fuel lines. Also, prime the fuel system in order to fill the water separator and the fuel filters after replacing these components.

Note: Be certain that both fuel supply shutoff valves, located next to the water separator, are open before attempting to prime the fuel system.

Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Water Separator - Replace" for information on the location of the fuel supply shutoff valves.

Fuel system priming pump switch

An electric fuel system priming pump will fill the engine fuel lines and the fuel filters with fuel. The switch for the priming pump is located near the rear hinge of the engine access doors on the right-hand side of the machine. Open the right-hand engine access doors in order to operate the priming pump switch.

Note: The engine start switch must be in the OFF position in order to prime the fuel system.

  1. Hold the priming pump switch upward in order to activate the electric fuel priming pump. As the air is purged from the fuel system, fuel pressure will increase.

Note: The length of time required to prime the fuel system will vary based on the amount of air that must be purged from the system.

  2. Hold the priming pump switch upward for an initial activation of 3 minutes. If possible, listen for the electric fuel priming pump to come under load. Release the priming pump switch after 3 minutes, or after hearing the priming pump come under load, whichever event occurs first.

  3. Attempt to start the engine. If the engine starts, and runs smoothly, no further priming is necessary. If the engine does not start, activate the electric priming pump again as described in step 2. If the engine starts, but runs rough, stop the engine and activate the electric priming pump again as described in step 2.

  4. Repeat step 2 and step 3 until the engine starts, and runs smoothly.

  5. If the engine does not start after several attempts, consult your Cat dealer.
