Fuel System Primary Filter - Replace

Usage:

994K MM9

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from a fire.

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.

Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.

Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.

NOTICE

Do not fill fuel filters with fuel before installing them. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts.

NOTICE

Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over disconnected fuel system component.

The fuel system primary filter is located behind the engine access door on the left-hand side of the machine.

  1. Close both fuel supply shutoff valves that are located on either side of the fuel system water separator.

Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Water Separator - Replace" for information on the location of the fuel supply shutoff valves.

  3. Locate the primary fuel filter. The primary fuel filter is mounted to the side of the engine on the left-hand side of the machine.

  4. Use a strap type wrench to remove the primary fuel filter. Dispose of the used filter properly.

Note: The filter contains fuel. When you remove the filter, use caution in order to avoid spilling the fuel.

Note: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "General Hazard Information" for information on containing fluid spillage.

  5. Clean the mounting base of the fuel filter. Make sure that all of the old seal material is removed from the mounting base.

  6. Apply a thin coat of clean diesel fuel to the sealing surface of the new fuel filter.

  7. Install the new filter by hand until the seal of the filter contacts the mounting base. Continue to tighten the filter one additional full turn after the seal contacts the mounting base.

Note: You may need to use a Cat strap type wrench, or another suitable tool, in order to turn the filter to the amount that is required for final installation. Make sure that the installation tool does not damage the filter.

  8. Open the fuel supply shutoff valves that were closed in step 1.

  9. Prime the fuel system. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for instructions.

  10. Close the engine access door on the left-hand side of the machine.
