Installation Of 8N618, 8N619, 8N620 And 8N621 Ether Starting Aid Groups{1456} Caterpillar

Installation Of 8N618, 8N619, 8N620 And 8N621 Ether Starting Aid Groups{1456}

Usage:

3406 (90U, 91U, 92U),
3408 (67U, 99U, 28V, 48W),
3412 (38S, 60M)

The schematic shows the parts in the ether starting aid group and their approximate location. Parts shown are as follows: 5P2948 Connector (1), Ether Valve (2), 7N2059 Clamp (3), 6N5899 Temperature Switch (4), 6N9587 Connector (5), 7N8132 Switch (6), 2L8075 Terminal (7), 5P5623 Wire (8), Ether Atomizer (9), 7N140 Flexible Coupling (10), 8N3536 Tube (11), Ether Cylinder (A) (not part of a group - must order separately), Cylinder Head (B), Control Panel or Dash (C), Wiring to Battery (D), Inlet Manifold (E).

This instruction gives the installation procedure for 12V, 24V and 30/32V ether starting aid groups for 3400 Series Engines. At installation of the atomizer, it is important that it be installed with the identification mark in a specific position. Use the index to find the installation instructions, by engine model, that are needed.

Aftercooler Cover - 3408 Engines

For those 3408 Engines that are equipped with a 4N5832 Cover (1) for the aftercooler, either drill hole (A) to 11.0Ø (.43"Ø) and make 1/4"-18 pipe threads in the hole, or install an 8N1000 Cover as a replacement.

NOTE: If hole (A) is made larger for the 1/4"-18 threads in a 4N5832 Cover, remove the cover from the engine before this work is done. After the hole is drilled and the new threads are made, inspect the area around the hole for possible cracks or damage.

Installation Procedure

(1) Put 5P2948 Connector (1) in ether valve (2). Install ether valve (2) in a good location, as follows:

A. Install in a vertical position that is within the angle limit shown.

B. As near the engine manifold as possible, but not on the engine.

C. Do not install the ether valve in a location where the temperature is more than 93°C (200°F).

(2) Install 7N2059 Clamp (3) directly above ether valve (2) according to the dimension shown.

According to the ether starting air group that is to be installed, the part number of the atomizer will be either 6N7672 or 6N9995, and will look like item (9) in one of the above illustrations. When either atomizer is installed on an engine, the arrow [(F) or (G)] must be put in a specific position for each engine model. This instruction gives the correct position of the arrow for all engines.

It is necessary to remove a 1/4" pipe plug from the air inlet system of the engine to install an atomizer (9). A 6N5899 Temperature Switch must also be installed, after a 3/8" pipe plug is removed from the cylinder head. See the information that follows for the location of the plugs to remove for installation of the temperature switch and an atomizer (9).

Installation of 7N8132 Switch and Connection of Ether Starting Aid

(1) Install 7N8132 Switch (1). The best location is on the control panel, if possible, in an area that gives the operator good access for use of the switch at engine start-up.

(2) Use 5P5623 Wire (2) (black, 16 gauge), 6N9587 Connectors (3) and 2L8075 Terminals to connect switch (1) and temperature switch (4) to ether valve (5). Connect terminal (6) to the positive side of the battery.

(3) Use two pieces of 8N3536 Steel Tube (7), with a total length of 1829 mm (72.0"), and 7N140 Coupling (8) to connect atomizer (9) to fitting (10) in ether valve (5) as shown.

NOTE: It is a recommendation to not use more 8N3536 Steel Tube than the length that is given in step 3.

(4) Install a 7N296 Ether Cylinder (11) on ether valve (5) and use clamp (12) to hold it in position. Install 5P3591 Instruction Film as near as possible to switch (1).
