Usage:
Use the 8N4904 Conversion Kit for service of all Woodward UG8 Governors given in the list above. There is a new printed circuit board in the conversion group. There are also resistors that are used to give protection to the circuit board diodes if there is a problem with AC voltage at the governor. A new decal that shows the motor and circuit diagram is also a part of the conversion kit.
NOTE: Make a comparison of the voltage shown on the decal on the outside of the governor housing and the voltage of the motor power source. It is possible the motor can be wired for either 24-32VDC or 110-115 VAC. Circuit diagrams given in this instruction will show the correct connections for installation of this conversion kit.
(1) Shut off the fuel supply to the engine.
(2) Put some type of identification on the wires for electrical supply to the permanent magnet motor, then disconnect the wires.
(3) Remove the permanent magnet motor and governor top cover, then remove the original printed circuit board.
NOTE: Earlier governor housings have only one resistor. Later governor housings have two resistors to give additional protection to the motor circuit if there is a wrong connection of AC power to the lead-in wires. All governors must have the second resistor installed to get this additional protection. Use the two screws that are in the conversion kit to install this resistor. The resistors install one on top of the other. Tighten the screws to 2 lb. in. (0.2 N·m).
Make reference to the correct wiring diagram that follows to make connection of the wires. The printed circuit board has connection numbers on it, and the motor connector numbers are on the motor decal.
Connections For AC Power Source
(1) Connect blue wire to No. 1 Connector.
(2) Connect black wire to No. 7 Connector.
(3) Connect red wire to No. 8 Connector.
(4) Connect wires of one resistor to Connectors 7 and 9.
(5) Connect wires of the other resistor to Connectors 8 and 10.
(6) Connect the No. 1 wire from the motor to Connector No. 1.
(7) Connect the No. 2 wire from the motor to Connector No. 2.
(8) Put circuit board (1) in position in grooves (A) of the housing. Be sure the circuit board goes in the groove at the bottom.
(9) Install the new decal for the wiring diagram to the bottom side of the governor cover. Install the governor cover and tighten the screws to 25 lb. in (2.8 N·m).
(10) Correctly connect the power source to the governor and turn on the fuel supply.
NOTE: To check the performance of the synchronizing motor before the engine is started, move the motor switch to RAISE. The synchronizer knob on the front of the governor must move to RAISE position. Move the motor switch to LOWER and the knob must move to LOWER position. If the motor does not operate correctly, find and correct the problem.
