Description of Change: A new fuel pump drive idler gear assembly and idler gear shaft are used in the front timing gear groups. The new idler shaft has a longer pilot with a larger pilot diameter. This will result in a light press fit into the block. The shaft diameter has also been increased in the area that rides on the bushing. This will reduce the clearance between the bushing and the shaft. The new idler gear assembly includes a new narrower bushing.

Adaptable To: Chart A identifies the changed components in the front timing gear group. Chart B lists the effectivity of the new components.

The former gear assembly can NOT be used with the new shaft unless the former 5S7630 Bushing is replaced with the new 2S6692 Bushing. The new bushing must be pressed into the bore in the gear to a depth of 3.0 mm (.12 in).

Location of components. (1) 1059772 Shaft. (2) 1064497 Gear Assembly.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the new shaft (1). Drive the pilot of the shaft into the cylinder block until the plate contacts the cylinder plate.

2. Install the 0S1594 Bolts with 5M2894 Washers. DO NOT use the 5S7611 Lock. See the Reference. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 45 N·m (35 lb ft). Tighten the nut to a torque of 25 N·m (20 lb ft).

3. Tap the end of the new shaft with a soft hammer four or five times. Then tighten the two bolts and one nut to the correct torque again.

4. Install the new gear assembly and the 8N4960 Thrust Plate.
