3500 Family Of Spark-Ignited Engines ( 2JF, 3RC, 4KC )
A new series of pistons is being phased into production for the 3500 Family Of Spark-Ignited Engines. These pistons provide additional strength and resistance to pulling apart.
Currently, Caterpillar is supplying the field with only the new piston design. It is important to note that the new piston requires the use of a new profiled piston pin that is 4.6 mm (.18") longer than the former pin.
Be aware of this change when ordering and replacing pistons. The chart lists the piston and corresponding pin part numbers. The use of the shorter, former 7C8610 Pin with the new 7E7600 or 7E7940 Piston will result in excessive end play of the pin in the bore. This can result in failure of the piston pin retaining snap ring.
