Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately. |

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide"for tools and supplies to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations. |
Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires, and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.
- Open the engine enclosure.
- Disconnect harness assembly (1) .

- Disconnect hose assemblies (2) .
- Use Tooling (A) and remove fuel filter housing (4) from fuel filter base (3). Drain the fuel from fuel filter housing (4) into a suitable container for disposal. Remove the fuel filter element from fuel filter housing (4) .
- Remove the bolts and fuel filter base (3) .
Installation Procedure
- Install fuel filter base (3) and the bolts.

- Install the fuel filter element into fuel filter housing (4). Install fuel filter housing (4) to fuel filter base (3). Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct procedure.
- Connect hose assemblies (2) .
- Connect harness assembly (1) .
- Close the engine enclosure.
