Schematic for the Propel Mode Selector Switch

Location of the Propel Mode Selector Switch

This diagnostic code is associated with the Propel Mode Selector Switch. The Propel Mode Selector Switch has two inputs for the Propel Lever. Both inputs are grounded in the center position. In the other switch positions, one of the inputs is open and the other input is grounded. A failure is detected when both inputs are open.

Note: The Propel Lever communicates an abnormal condition for the Propel Mode Selector Switch to the Machine ECM over the CAN data link.

This diagnostic code is recorded when both inputs are open.

The possible causes of the problem are listed below:

  • Wire K708-BU is open between the Propel Lever and the Propel Mode Selector Switch.

  • Wire K709-GY is open between the Propel Lever and the Propel Mode Selector Switch.

  • The Propel Mode Selector Switch has failed.

  • Wire F712-GY is grounded or open between the Propel Lever and the ECM.

  • Wire F711-GN is grounded or open between the Propel Lever and the ECM.

  • There is an open on wire 200-BK.

  • The ECM has failed. This situation is unlikely.

System Response:

  • The machine will not move.

  • The fault lamp for the propulsion system is ON.

  • The action alarm and action lamp is ON.

Test Step 1. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE

  1. Inspect the harness connectors. Clean the contacts of the harness connectors. Check the wires for damage to the insulation that is caused by excessive heat, corrosion, or chafing.

  1. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the circuit.

  1. Reconnect all harness connectors. Make sure that the connectors are fully seated and the clips for each connector are fastened.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) service tool, if available, in order to perform a "Wiggle Test" on the machine wiring harness. The wiggle test can detect intermittent shorts or opens in the machine wiring harness.

  1. Operate the machine.

  1. Determine if the CID 2760 FMI 02 diagnostic code is active.

Expected Result:

The CID 2760 FMI 02 diagnostic code is active.

Results:

  • YES - The CID 2760 FMI 02 diagnostic code is active. The problem has not been corrected. Proceed to Test Step 2.

  • NO - The CID 2760 FMI 02 diagnostic code is not active. The problem does not exist at this time.

Repair: The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.

Test Step 2. CHECK THE CIRCUIT FOR THE PROPEL MODE SELECTOR SWITCH

( 4 ) Open to Pin 2 (Wire 200-BK).

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the connector from the Propel Mode Selector Switch.

  1. Connect one lead of a multimeter to Pin 3 of the switch.

  1. Connect the other lead of the multimeter to Pin 2 of the switch.

  1. Check for continuity in the three switch positions.

  1. Move the multimeter lead from Pin 3 to Pin 4 on the switch.

  1. Move the multimeter lead from Pin 2 to Pin 5 on the switch.

  1. Check for continuity in the three switch positions.

Expected Result:

The continuity checks of the switch are correct according to Table 1.

Results:

  • OK - The continuity checks of the switch are correct according to the Table above. Proceed to test step 3.

  • NOT OK - The continuity checks of the switch are correct according to the Table above. The switch has failed.

    Repair: Replace the switch.

    STOP

Test Step 3. CHECK THE HARNESS

  1. The harness connector remains disconnected from the Propel Lever.

  1. Install a jumper between contact 13 and contact 14 on the Propel lever.

  1. Measure the resistance between contacts 3 (wire K708-BU) and 4 (wire K709-GY) of the connector for the Propel Mode Selector switch.

  1. Remove the jumper installed in the previous Test Step.

  1. Install the jumper between contact 3 and contact 4 on the Propel lever.

  1. Disconnect the J2 connector from the Machine ECM.

  1. Measure the resistance between contacts J2-67 (wire F711-GN) and J2-68 (wire F712-GY) of the J2 connector for the Machine ECM.

Expected Result:

The resistance is less than 5 ohms for each measurement.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms . The harness is correct. The Propel Lever may have failed.

Repair: Failure of the Propel Lever is unlikely. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. Prior to replacing the Propel Lever, always contact your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the Propel Lever is to be replaced, see Testing and Adjusting, KENR8853, "Propel Control - Calibrate" in order to calibrate the sensors to the Propel Lever. If replacement of the Propel Lever does not correct the problem, the ECM may have failed. Failure of the ECM is unlikely. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    STOP

  • NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5 ohms for one or both of the measurements. The harness has failed.

Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    STOP
