Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


Note: Put identification marks on all hose assemblies and on all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to prevent contaminants from entering the system.

  1. Disconnect grease hose assemblies (1).

  2. Disconnect grease hose assemblies (2).

  3. Use Tooling (G) to remove retaining rings (3) and (5). Remove retaining ring (3) and plug (4). Remove retaining ring (5) and plug (6).

  4. Use Tooling (A) to retain ball stud (7). Use Tooling (B) to loosen locknut (8).

    Note: Do not remove locknut (8) completely from ball stud (7).

  5. Use Tooling (C) to drive ball stud (7) out of the taper. Remove locknut (8). Separate steering link (9) from center arm (10).

  6. Use Tooling (D) to support steering link (9). The weight of steering link (9) is approximately 115 kg (253 lb).

  7. Secure steering link (9) out of the way. Remove Tooling (D).

  8. Repeat Steps 4 and 7 for the remaining ball stud.

  9. Use Tooling (E) to support center arm (10). The weight of center arm (10) is approximately 90 kg (198 lb).

  10. Remove bolts (11) and lock (12). Lower pin (13) onto plate (14). Remove plate (14) to remove pin (13).

  11. Remove center arm (10).

  12. Remove shims (15).

    Note: Note the order and the quantity of shims (15) for installation purposes.

  13. Use Tooling (F) to remove bearing (16) from the frame assembly.

  14. Use Tooling (F) to remove bearing (17) from the frame assembly.

Note: Inspect the O-ring seals. Replace the O-ring seals that are worn or damaged.

Note: Lubricate all the O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

  1. Lower the temperature of bearing (17). Use Tooling (F) to install bearing (17) into the frame assembly.

  2. Lower the temperature of bearing (16). Use Tooling (F) to install bearing (16) into the frame assembly.

  3. Use Tooling (E) to position center arm (10). The weight of center arm (10) is approximately 90 kg (198 lb).

  4. Measure the distance between the top of center arm (10) and the bottom of the frame. Install several shims (15) that provides a gap of 0.7 ± 0.6 mm (0.03 ± 0.02 inch).

  5. Install pin (13). Install plate (14). Install lock (12) and bolts (11).

  6. Apply Tooling (H) onto the ball stud. Use Tooling (D) to install steering link (9). The weight of steering link (9) is approximately 115 kg (253 lb). Remove Tooling (D).

  7. Apply Tooling (H) onto the face of locknut (8). Install locknut (8). Use Tooling (A) to retain ball stud (7). Use Tooling (B) to tighten locknut (8). Tighten locknut (8) to a torque of 2060 ± 100 N·m (1519 ± 74 lb ft).

  8. Use Tooling (G) to install retaining rings (5) and (3). Install plug (6) and retaining ring (5). Install plug (4) and retaining ring (3).

  9. Connect grease hose assemblies (2).

  10. Connect grease hose assemblies (1).

  11. Check the alignment of the front wheels. Refer to Steering Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Front Wheel - Align".
