Safety Messages

There are several specific safety messages on your machine. The exact location of the hazard and description of the hazard are reviewed in this section. Take the time in order to become familiar with these safety messages.

You must be able to read all safety messages. Clean the safety messages in order to read the words. Clean the safety messages in order to see the pictures. Replace the safety messages in order to read the words. Replace the safety messages in order to see the pictures. In order to clean the safety messages, use a cloth, water and soap. Do not use solvent, gasoline, etc.

Replace any damaged safety messages or missing safety messages. Replace any safety messages that cannot be read. If a safety message is on a part that has been replaced, a new safety message must be installed on the replacement part. See your dealer for a new film.

Do Not Operate (1)

This safety message is located on the operator's platform near the exhaust stack.

Hot Surface (2)

This safety message is located on the operator's platform near the exhaust stack.

Hot parts or hot components can cause burns or personal injury. Do not allow hot parts or components to contact your skin. Use protective clothing or protective equipment to protect your skin.


Seat Belt (3)

This safety message is located on the operator's platform near the exhaust stack.

Falling from the machine could cause serious injury or death. Seat belts should be worn when driving the machine on public roads.


Falling Hazard (4)

This safety message is located on the operator's platform near the exhaust stack.

Unexpected parking brake application may occur going down ≥6% slopes in TRAVEL mode. Operate the machine in PAVE mode while travelling down slopes. Failure to follow these instructions could result in an overspeed condition, loss of control and/or sudden stopping by the secondary (emergency) braking system which could cause serious injury or death.

This machine is equipped with a Caterpillar Product Link communication device which must be deactivated within 12 m (40 ft) of a blast zone. Failure to do so could result in serious injury or death.


Pressurized System (6)

This safety message is located on the radiator filler cap.

Pressurized system! Hot coolant can cause serious burns, injury or death. To open the cooling system filler cap, stop the engine and wait until the cooling system components are cool. Loosen the cooling system pressure cap slowly in order to relieve the pressure. Read and understand the Operation and Maintenance Manual before performing any cooling system maintenance.


Jump Start Cables (7)

This safety message is located behind the left access door.

Explosion Hazard! Improper jumper cable connections can cause an explosion resulting in serious injury or death. Batteries may be located in separate compartments. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct jump starting procedure.


Travel Lock (8)

This safety message is located on both hopper wings.

------ WARNING! ------

Raised hopper wings can unexpectedly swing down and cause a crushing hazard which could result in serious injury or death. Always engage the hopper travel locks in order to secure the hopper in the raised position. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Hopper Travel Lock" for directions on engaging the hopper travel lock.


Hot Surface (9)

This safety message is located on the exhaust stack.

Screed Travel Lock (10)

This safety message is located near each screed travel lock pin.

In order to prevent personal injury from accidental screed movement, lock the screed in the RAISED position by using the travel lock lever in order to extend the lock pins, after the screed is fully raised.


Entanglement (11)

This safety message is located on each tow arm.

Stay clear of the work tool during operation. Entanglement could result in personal injury or death.


Crush Hazard (12)

This safety message is located on each tow arm.

Stay back a safe distance. No clearance for a person in this area when the machine turns. Severe injury or death from crushing could occur.


Falling Hazard (13)

This safety message is located on each tow arm.

Do not use this surface as a step or platform. This surface may not support additional weight or may be slippery. Serious injury or death could occur from a fall.


Shock Hazard (14)

This safety message is located on the generator.

Aerosol Starting Aid (15)

This safety message is positioned on the cover of the intake duct of the air cleaner. The following information is not applicable to machines that are equipped with an ether starting aid.

Explosion hazard! Do not use ether! This machine is equipped with an air inlet heater. Using ether can create explosions or fires that can cause personal injury or death. Read and follow the starting procedure in the Operation and Maintenance Manual.


Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Starting" for the proper starting procedure.
