Description of Change: The new lip type seal for the pump shaft in new main hydraulic pumps has increased durability. In a cold condition, the former lip type seal would fail and oil would leak from the pump shaft. The new seal prevents the oil leaks from the pump shaft.
Adaptable To: The new 295-9695 Lip Type Seal replaces the former 242-6917 Lip Type Seal in the hydraulic pumps that are listed in Table 1. The effectivity of the new seal is listed in Table 2. The new seal is adaptable to the models that are listed.
Install the new lip type seal if the former lip type seal is leaking oil at the pump shaft. The location of the new seal is shown in Illustration 1.
Note: Make sure that the correct warm-up procedure is performed. Performing the correct procedure in extremely cold conditions can prevent failure of the seals. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual that is appropriate for your machine.

Installation Procedure For The New Lip Type Seal
Use the following information in order to install the new 295-9695 Lip Type Seal in the front cover for the main hydraulic pump.
- Identify the seal that is currently installed in the cover. The former seal has a metal ring that will be visible. The metal ring on the new lip type seal will not be visible. Refer to Illustration 2.

- Fabricate tool (A) from plastic. Refer to Illustration 3 for the dimensions. Tape can be used as an alternative for tool (A). Refer to Step 7.

- Fabricate tool (B) from mild steel. Refer to Illustration 4 for the dimensions. An alternative for tool (B) is a piece of 8T-4807 Tube that is 150 mm (5.9 inch) long. Refer to Step 10.

- Remove cover (D). Use two pry bars (AB) with flat tips. Pry out the cover.

- Remove O-ring seal (CC). Install a new O-ring seal before installing the cover with the new lip type seal. Lubricate the O-ring seal with oil before installation. The lubrication will prevent damage to the O-ring seal during installation.

- Install tool (A) on the shaft for the pump or cover the shaft with tape. Clean the external surface of the tool. Tool (A) or the tape are used in order to make sure that the new seal in the cover is not damaged by the splines on the pump shaft.
Note: Examine tool (A) before each use. Check the surface for scratches. Do not use the tool if a scratch can be felt with a fingernail. Check the tapered edge at the bottom of the tool. Make sure that the edge is not deformed. Do not use the tool if the tool is damaged.

- Install a new 295-9695 Lip Type Seal (1) to the cover (D) .
Note: Use tool (C) in order to mount the seal straight.

- Carefully install cover (D). Slide the cover slowly over tool (A) or the tape on the pump shaft.

- Slide tool (B) over tool (A) or slide the 150 mm (5.9 inch) length of 8T-4807 Tube over the tape on the pump shaft.

- Install cover (D) by striking tool (B) or the length of the 8T-4807 Tube with a soft faced hammer. Seat the cover until the groove for the snap ring is visible.
