This Special Instruction provides the information that is needed for installing the 290-9911 Engine Enclosure Seal Kit on the machines that are identified above. The kit contains various seals, covers, and brushes. These components are designed to cover the openings that exist between the frame and the body of the machines. These components prevent wood chips and other materials from entering the engine compartment and the lower frame.

Caterpillar recommends the use of a vented rear door. Refer to the instructions in Special Instructions, REHS4062, "Modifying the Rear Door for Improved Ventilation of the Engine Compartment" and the 265-4419 Debris Guard Kit (TURBOCHARGER) (EXHAUST MANIFOLD) with the 290-9911 Engine Enclosure Seal Kit .

The vented rear door that is provided in this kit is fabricated. The rear door is fabricated from a vinyl coated polyester material and the rear door utilizes hook and loop fasteners. "Two-sided tape" attaches the hook and loop fasteners to the machine. After the adhesive tape has cured, you can remove the cover assemblies and you can reinstall the cover assemblies, as needed.

Note: Some of the components in this kit utilize adhesive strips and adhesive backing as the means for attaching the component. Mounting surfaces for these components must be clean and free of grease in order to ensure proper adhesion. Use a cleaning solvent or a standard degreaser in order to remove grease and oil from the surface. Then, wipe the mounting surface with alcohol and allow the surface to dry completely before applying the adhesive.

Note: The cure time for the adhesive that is used on components in this kit is 24 hours. Once the adhesive is correctly placed on the mounting surface, the adhesive must not be disturbed for 24 hours.

Do not perform any procedure that is outlined in this publication until you read the information. Make sure that you understand the information that is contained in this document.

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
