Do not operate or work on this machine unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Contact any Caterpillar dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility. |
Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may cause personal injury. Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area, and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside. |
Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause serious injury to persons on or near the machine. To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the hydraulic system. |
For maximum service life of the machine, always make a visual inspection of the machine. The visual inspection should be done before you mount the machine.
Look around the machine and under the machine for items such as loose bolts, trash, oil leaks, coolant leaks, broken parts or worn parts.
Inspect the condition of the attachments and the screed. Inspect the condition of the hydraulic components.
Use the following procedure in order to perform a visual inspection of the machine:
- Move the machine to a surface that is smooth and hard. Move the machine away from other equipment and personnel.
- Lower the screed to the ground. Release any other hydraulic pressure in the system.
- On the paver, ensure that the parking brake and the service brake is in good working order.
- Move the propel lever for the paver to the NEUTRAL position.
- Inspect all hydraulic lines, hoses, and connections for damage or leakage. Keep a close watch for leaks. If any leaks are observed, find the source of the leak. Repair the leak.
Do not check for leaks with your hands. Pin hole (very small) leaks can result in a high velocity oil stream that will be invisible close to the hose. This oil can penetrate the skin and cause personal injury. Use cardboard or paper to locate pin hole leaks. |
Personal injury or death can result from improperly checking for a leak. Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak. Escaping air or fluid under pressure, even a pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue causing serious injury, and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury. |
- Inspect all control linkages for damaged components or broken components.
- Check the machine for loose wiring. Check the machine for frayed wiring.
- Inspect the steps, the walkways, and the handholds for damage or wear. Repair the components that are damaged or worn. Inspect the steps, the walkways, and the handholds for cleanliness. Clean the components.
