C9 Engine for the 816F Series 2 Landfill Compactor, the 815F Series 2 Soil Compactor, and the 814F Series 2 Wheel Dozer Caterpillar

Configuration Parameters

Usage:

814F II BXG
Use this procedure if the diagnostic code in Table 1 is active.

Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
Code and Description     Conditions which Generate this Code     System Response
268-2 Programmed Parameter Fault erratic, intermittent, or incorrect     The engine's Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects that one or more of the programmable parameters have not been programmed.     The ECM may use a default torque map or the ECM may limit the engine to low idle.
The code is active only.

System configuration parameters are parameters that affect emissions, power of the engine, and machine applications. Default values for the parameters are programmed at the factory. Some parameters may be changed by the customer in order to suit the needs of the specific application. You must reprogram the system configuration parameters if the ECM is replaced and/or if you reprogram the engine to a new rating. Values for these parameters are available on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). Certain configuration parameters are also stamped on the engine information plate.

Check Programmable Parameters (268-02)

If a programmable parameter has not been programmed, the ECM will generate a 268-02 Check Programmable Parameters diagnostic code. The unprogrammed parameters will be set to default. Certain aspects of the engine's performance and engine monitoring may be affected.

Parameter Descriptions

Equipment ID

This parameter allows the customer to enter a description into the ECM in order to identify the machine. A maximum of 17 characters can be entered in the field.

Engine Serial Number

Program the "Engine Serial Number" to match the engine serial number that is stamped on the engine information plate. The engine serial number is not preprogrammed on a replacement ECM.

ECM Part Number

This parameter identifies the part number for the ECM.

Engine Serial Number

Program this parameter to match the engine serial number that is stamped on the engine information plate. The engine serial number is not preprogrammed on a replacement ECM.

Software Group Part Number

This parameter identifies the part number of the flash file that is currently installed in the ECM.

Software Group Release Date

This parameter identifies the release date of the flash file that is currently installed in the ECM.

Software Group Description

This parameter identifies the description of the application for the flash file that is currently installed in the ECM.

Rating Number

The rating number corresponds to the selected set of performance maps that has been selected for this application. There may be more than one set of performance maps that are available for this engine. All of the maps are resident in the flash file for the engine.

Rated Power

This parameter specifies the rated power of the engine.

Rated Peak Torque

This parameter specifies the rated peak torque of the engine.

Top Engine Speed Range

This parameter specifies the maximum speed setting for the engine.

Test Spec

This is the engine's "Test Specifiction Number". Use this number to retrieve data that is related to the engine's specifications from the Technical Marketing Information System (TMI). The following information can be retrieved from TMI:

  • "As shipped consists"

  • "Engine test specifications"

  • "Systems data"

  • "Physical data"

  • "Gasket kit data"

  • "Reman parts"

  • "Performance data"

A link to TMI Web can be found on the web site for the Service Information System (SIS).

FLS (Full Load Setting)

"FLS" is a number that represents the adjustment to the fuel system that was made at the factory in order to fine tune the fuel system. The correct value for this parameter is stamped on the engine information plate. Only change this value if the engine is rerated or if a new ECM is installed. The parameter allows one time of programming without a factory password. In order to change the "FLS" after the initial programming, factory passwords are required.

FTS (Full Torque Setting)

"FTS" is similar to "FLS". Only change this value if the engine is rerated or if a new ECM is installed. Factory passwords are required. A new ECM or a blank ECM allows one time of programming of the "FTS" without the use of factory passwords. In order to change the "FTS" after the initial programming, factory passwords are required.

Total Tattletale

The total tattletale counts the number of changes to system parameters.

Low System Battery Voltage Elevated Idle

Set the "Low System Battery Voltage Elevated Idle" parameter to "Enabled" in order to help maintain a proper charge on the batteries when electrical accessories have been added by the customer. This feature increases engine rpm to 1000 when the following conditions are met:

  • The parameter is set to "Enabled".

  • System battery voltage is less than 24.5 VDC for five minutes.

  • The throttle pedal position is below 25 percent for five minutes.

  • The machine is not in gear.

  • The parking brake is set.

The engine rpm will return to low idle when any of the following conditions occur:

  • The parking brake is released.

  • The transmission is not in neutral.

  • The throttle is above 25 percent.

Ether Solenoid Configuration

The parameter for the "Ether Solenoid Configuration" allows the ether solenoid to be Installed or Not Installed.

Top Engine Limit

This parameter is the maximum engine rpm when the engine is under load. The engine will still achieve top engine speed under no load conditions.

Injector Trim File

This parameter is for the injector trim files that are associated with each injector. If an injector is replaced or if two injectors are exchanged between cylinders, the injector trim file for the injector must be programmed to the correct cylinder.
