Introduction

This Special Instruction contains the procedure to lubricate the replacement gear pumps for the machines that are listed. When you replace a gear pump from this list, complete the following procedure before starting the machine.

Safety

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

----------------------

NOTICE

Due to the location of some low pressure gear pumps in regard to the sump, careful priming of the pump is the only way to assure that scoring and failure do not occur.

NOTICE

Before operation, the pump must be lubricated with oil and the pump must rotate freely by hand or damage will result.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide"for tools and supplies to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations.

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contamination of the hydraulic system with foreign material will reduce the service life of the hydraulic system components.

To prevent contaminants from entering the hydraulic system, always plug or cap the lines, fittings, or hoses as they are disconnected. Cover any disassembled components and clean them properly before assembly.

Clean the hydraulic system properly after any major component exchange or especially after a component failure, to remove any contamination.

NOTICE

Maintain the oil in the hydraulic system at the correct level to prevent pump cavitation.

Note: Before working on the machine that is being serviced, follow all recommended safety procedures for machine preparation. Refer to the Operations and Maintenance Manual, Disassembly and Assembly, and Service Manuals for the machine that is being serviced.

Start-up Procedure

Note: Always ensure that no foreign materials are allowed to enter the pump or the system that is being serviced during handling of the pump and during installation.

  1. In normal temperature conditions, completely fill the pump with STP Oil Treatment and ensure that the pump rotates freely by hand. In cold weather, substitute system oil from the system that is being serviced.

Use the filler plug opening if one exists. Use the inlet port if no plug exists. Refer to Illustrations 1 through 18 that are included in the "Illustrations" section that follows in order to determine the appropriate fill port.

  1. Install the pump.

ReferenceRefer to Disassembly and Assembly for the machine that is being serviced.

  1. Check all related filters and pick up screens. Replace filters. Clean the screens.

  1. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubrication Viscosities and Refill Capacities" for all fluid capacities and filling procedures.

  1. Run the machine at half throttle or higher at start-up. This will allow oil to be pulled more quickly from the sump.
