Introduction

The problem that is identified below has a solution. The parts are not currently available. Until the new parts are available, use the Temporary Corrective Action that is identified below.

Problem

The Caterpillar Factory and the Transport Company do not typically use the 5P-8500 Key that is shipped with the machine. The tolerances of the Key and Start Switch cause the tip of the Key to have an interference fit when the Key is inserted into the Start Switch with extra force. When you attempt to remove a stuck key, the key will break.

Solution

The nominal thickness and the tolerance for the 5P-8500 Key is being changed in order to allow a proper fit of the Key into the Start Switch. Keys that fit properly should be shipped with the machines that are built after 1June 2006.

Temporary Corrective Action

Try another Key that was shipped with the machine, or try another Key from a different machine. Scrap The Key that does not fit.
