Troubleshooting the Bucket Positioner Mechanism (Return to Dig Mechanism) {5051, 5109, 5112, 5734}

Usage:

416D B2D
Backhoe Loader:
416D (S/N: B2D1-UP; BGJ1-UP; BFP1-UP)
420D (S/N: BKC1-UP; FDP1-UP)
424D (S/N: RXA1-UP; BGP1-UP; BKR1-UP; CJZ1-UP)
428D (S/N: BNB1-UP; BLL1-UP; MBM1-UP)
430D (S/N: BNK1-UP)

ReferenceSpecifications, RENR3582, "416D, 420D, 424D, 428D, 430D, 432D, 438D and 442D Backhoe Loaders Hydraulic and Steering System", "Bucket Positioner and Lift Kickout"

ReferenceSpecifications, RENR7778, "416D, 420D, 424D, 428D, 430D, 432D and 442D Backhoe Loaders Hydraulic and Steering System", "Bucket Positioner and Lift Kickout"

The bucket positioner automatically positions the loader bucket to the correct angle for digging. In order to adjust the bucket positioner, the back of the bucket must be 25.0 mm (0.98 inch) off the ground when the cutting edge is just touching the ground.

The 206-1486 Roller Switch Assembly (1) is located on the bucket linkage (2). The roller switch assembly is adjusted with the bucket in the proper digging angle in order to set the proper orientation for digging.

Note: Refer to Specifications, "Bucket Positioner and Lift Kickout" for the proper adjustment procedure.

The 3E-8620 Solenoid Coil As (4) and the armature plate (5) for the bucket positioner are located in the bottom of the loader tilt control valve. In order to check that the bucket positioner operates properly, position the loader arm parallel to the ground. Position the bucket fully in the DUMP position. Move the tilt control lever fully to the TILTBACK position. The tilt control lever should stay in this position until the bucket is in the level position. When the bucket is level, the tilt control lever should return to the HOLD position.

The following conditions can cause the bucket positioner to malfunction.

No electric power is getting to the 3E-8620 Solenoid Coil As (4) in the tilt control valve for the bucket positioner. This can occur when the following conditions exist:

  • The fuse for the power supply is blown.

  • An open circuit exists in the harness that connects the 206-1486 Roller Switch Assembly (1) and the 3E-8620 Solenoid Coil As (4) .

  • The 206-1486 Roller Switch Assembly (1) has failed.

Note: The bucket must be fully in the DUMP position in order to ensure that the 206-1486 Roller Switch Assembly (1) is in the CLOSED position. The roller switch assembly must be on the ramp (3) on the bucket linkage group (2). Refer to Illustration 2.

The 3E-8620 Solenoid Coil As (4) in the tilt control valve has electric power but the bucket positioner does not function. This can occur when the following conditions exist:

Illustration 4g01222591

  • The 3E-8620 Solenoid Coil As has failed.

  • The armature plate (5) does not contact the 3E-8620 Solenoid Coil As (4) on the tilt control valve. Refer to Illustration 3.

  • The armature plate (5) is installed backward on the tilt control valve. Refer to Illustration 3.

  • The armature plate (5) contains dirt or rust. Refer to Illustration 3.

  • Refer to Illustration 4. The lever assembly (7) and the plate (8) are located on top of the tilt control valve. The lever assembly and the plate must allow the full travel distance for the spool. The full travel distance for the spool will allow the armature plate (5) to contact the 3E-8620 Solenoid Coil As (4). Refer to Illustration 3.

  • The roller switch assembly is not properly adjusted on the bucket linkage.

Note: Refer to Specifications, "Bucket Positioner and Lift Kickout" for the proper adjustment procedure.

Refer to Illustration 2. The 206-1486 Roller Switch Assembly (1) will be off the ramp (3) on the bucket linkage (2) when the bucket is correctly oriented. When the bucket is correctly oriented, the switch opens. Electric power stops flowing to the magnet.

If the above conditions exist, please check the following items in the listed order:

  1. Inspect the 206-1486 Roller Switch Assembly (1). Check that the roller switch assembly is adjusted to specifications. Refer to Specifications, "Bucket Positioner and Lift Kickout" for the proper adjustment procedure.

  1. Refer to Illustration 3. Disassemble the housing (6) from the 3E-8620 Solenoid Coil As (4) on the tilt control valve in order to inspect the armature plate (5). The armature plate should be free of dirt and rust. Make sure that the armature plate is properly assembled. When the spool is at the full travel distance for the tilt control valve, the armature plate should contact the magnet. No gap should exist.

  1. Refer to Illustration 4. Measure the gap (A) between the lever assembly (7) and the plate (8) that is located on top of the tilt control valve. The gap should be 13 ± 2 mm (0.5 ± 0.1 inch).

Note: When you check the gap (A), the plate (8) must be level. This gap should be 13 ± 2 mm (0.5 ± 0.1 inch) in order to prevent interference between the lever assembly and the plate. If the gap is too small, the bucket positioner and kickout group can be disabled. If the gap needs to be reset to 13 ± 2 mm (0.5 ± 0.1 inch), refer to the instructions in Specifications, "Bucket Positioner and Lift Kickout".

After you have made all necessary repairs and adjustments, review the information in Specifications, "Bucket Positioner and Lift Kickout" in order to check that the functions for the bucket positioner and kickout group are within specifications.
