Axle Housing (Service Brakes, Differential and Bevel Gear) - Disassemble

Start By:

  1. Remove the axle housing, the axle shaft, and the wheel flange. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Housing, Axle Shaft, and Wheel Flange - Remove".

    Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.

    Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.

    Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.

  1. Remove bolts (2) from brake cylinder (1) .

  1. Remove brake cylinder (1). Remove the differential and bevel gear assembly from the right side of the center housing.

  1. Remove piston (5) from brake cylinder (1). Remove sleeve (3), bevel washers (4), O-ring seal (6), and O-ring seal (7) .

  1. Remove plugs (8). Remove actuation pins (10) from piston (5). Remove O-ring seals (9) and (11) from actuation pins (10) .

  1. Remove bolt (12) and retainer (13). Use Tooling (A) and remove spanner nut (14). If necessary, remove bearing cup (15) from brake cylinder (1) .

  1. Use Tooling (B) and remove bearing cone (16) .

  1. Use Tooling (B) and remove bearing cone (17) .

  1. Lock the differential in a vise. Remove bolts (18) and remove bevel gear (19) from the differential.

  1. Remove cover (20). Remove plates (21) and discs (22). Remove side gear (23) .

  1. Use a suitable hammer and a punch in order to remove locking pin (24). Remove shaft (25). Remove thrust washers (26) and gears (27) .

  1. Remove side gear (28). Remove discs (29) and plates (30) .

  1. If necessary, remove bushing (31) .

  1. If necessary, remove bushing (32) .

  1. Use Tooling (C) and remove retaining ring (33). Remove spacer (34) .

  1. Remove locknut (35) out of the locking tab. Use Tooling (D) and Tooling (E) in order to loosen locknut (35). Remove locknut (35), washer (36), and spacer (37) .

  1. Tap the end of pinion shaft (38) with a soft faced hammer in order to remove pinion shaft (38) .

  1. Remove bearing cone (41), washers (39), and collapsible spacer (40) from pinion shaft (38) .

  1. Use Tooling (F) and a suitable press in order to remove bearing cone (42) from pinion shaft (38). Remove the shim that is positioned under bearing cone (42) .

  1. Use a suitable hammer and a punch and remove bearing cups (43) from the center housing.
