Compensating Cylinder - Remove and Install

Start By:

  1. Release the system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release".

Cylinders equipped with lock valves can remain pressurized for very long periods of time, even with the hoses removed.

Failure to relieve pressure before removing a lock valve or disassembling a cylinder can result in personal injury or death.

Ensure all pressure is relieved before removing a lock valve or disassembling a cylinder.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Install Tooling (A) under boom (1) .

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device to the rod end of boom cylinder (2). The weight of the end of boom cylinder (2) is approximately 41 kg (90 lb). Remove pin assembly (3) .

  1. Use the suitable lifting device in order to place boom cylinder (2) onto suitable cribbing.

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device to the rod end of compensating cylinder (4). The weight of compensating cylinder (4) is approximately 28 kg (60 lb). Remove pin assembly (5) .

  1. Use the suitable lifting device in order to place compensating cylinder (4) onto suitable cribbing.

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device to compensating cylinder (4). The weight of compensating cylinder (4) is approximately 54 kg (120 lb).

  1. Disconnect hose assemblies (7) and (8). Remove pin assembly (6). Remove compensating cylinder (4) .

Disassembly Procedure

Cylinders equipped with lock valves can remain pressurized for very long periods of time, even with the hoses removed.

Failure to relieve pressure before removing a lock valve or disassembling a cylinder can result in personal injury or death.

Ensure all pressure is relieved before removing a lock valve or disassembling a cylinder.

Cylinder stroke ... 355 mm (14 inch)

(1) Bore of cylinder ... 90 mm (3.5 inch)

(2) Diameter of rod ... 45 mm (1.8 inch)

(3) Sleeve Bearing

Diameter ... 61.994 ± 0.006 mm (2.4407 ± 0.0002 inch)
Bore ... 39.994 ± 0.006 mm (1.5746 ± 0.0002 inch)

Torque setting for the piston ... 710 N·m (524 lb ft)

Apply sealant to the wiper seal groove prior to assembly.

Note: Lubricate all seals with clean lubricant that is being sealed.

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device to compensating cylinder (4). The weight of compensating cylinder (4) is approximately 54 kg (120 lb). Install compensating cylinder (4) .

  1. Use the suitable lifting device in order to place compensating cylinder (4) onto suitable cribbing.

  1. Install pin assembly (6). Connect hose assemblies (7) and (8) to compensating cylinder (4) .

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device to the rod end of compensating cylinder (4). The weight of compensating cylinder (4) is approximately 28 kg (60 lb). Lift the rod end of compensating cylinder (4) and install pin assembly (5) .

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device to the rod end of boom cylinder (2). The weight of the end of boom cylinder (2) is approximately 41 kg (90 lb). Raise the rod end of boom cylinder (2) and install pin assembly (3) .

  1. Remove Tooling (A) from boom (1) .
