Cat Data Link block diagram |
The Cat Data Link is an input and an output of the ECM. The purpose of the data link is to communicate with other electronic control modules on the machine or to communicate with a service tool. The data link is bi-directional which allows the ECM to input and output information. The data link is not a visible component; it consists of internal ECM circuits, the related harness wiring, and the service tool connector.
Much information is available on the Cat Data Link. The ECM, the conveyor ECM, and the automatic burner control require the use of certain data that is sent back and forth on the Cat Data Link. Some of the shared information is:
- The ECM sends harness code information to the conveyor ECM. This harness code information tells the conveyor ECM on which machine sales model it is installed.
- The ECM sends its paving status to the conveyor ECM. This paving status tells the conveyor ECM whether it should turn on the augers and conveyors while they are in auto mode.
- The ECM sends the traction assist command to the conveyor ECM. This traction assist command tells the conveyor ECM if it should turn on the traction assist solenoid.
- The ECM receives the status of the auger and conveyor switches from the conveyor ECM. This information tells the ECM whether or not the conveyor ECM is in a paving condition.
Note: All electronic control modules that use Cat Data Link have a module identifier (MID). The MID numbers are: Conveyor ECM - 1B, Propel ECM - 1C and Automatic Burner Control - 54.
