Start By:

  1. Remove the engine enclosure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Enclosure (Hood) - Remove and Install".
  2. Remove the air cleaner. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Air Cleaner - Remove and Install".
  3. Remove the muffler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Muffler - Remove and Install".
  4. Remove the electric starting motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install".
  5. Tilt the cab.

Note: SERVICE DATA: TOOLING (ZZ) WILL NOT BE IDENTIFIED IN PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE REMOVAL OR THE INSTALLATION. THIS TOOLING IS SHOWN IN ORDER TO ASSIST THE EXPERIENCED SERVICEMAN.

Note: Put identification marks on all hoses, on all hose assemblies, on all wires, and on all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies. This helps to prevent fluid loss, and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Disconnect batteries before performance of any service work.

  1. Drain the radiator into a suitable container. The capacity of the radiator is approximately 30 L (8 US gal). Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change".

  1. Loosen the clamp and disconnect hose (1) from radiator (2) .

  1. Remove the bolt and clamp (3) .

  1. Remove bolts (4). Move air pressure regulator (5) out of the way.

  1. Remove bolts (6) and shroud assembly (7) .

  1. Loosen bolts (9) on top of fuel filter assembly (8) .

  1. Remove nut (10) from the end of propel cable (12) .

  1. Loosen jam nut (11) and move propel cable (12) out of the way.

  1. Remove the bolts, the spacer plate, and valve (13) from support (14) .

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device to support (14). Remove bolts (15) and support (14). The weight of support (14) is approximately 39 kg (85 lb).

  1. Loosen the clamp and disconnect hoses (16) from the engine. Remove cable strap (17) .

  1. Loosen clamp (19) and disconnect hose assembly (20) .

  1. Disconnect hose assembly (18) .

  1. Disconnect hose assemblies (21) .

  1. Remove clamps (22) and move hose assemblies (21) out of the way.

  1. Disconnect harness assemblies (23) .

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device to side door (25) and the frame ballast. The total weight of side door (25) and frame ballast is approximately 3800 kg (8380 lb). Loosen jam nut (27) and remove bolt (26). Lower side door (25). Remove the suitable lifting device.

  1. Disconnect harness assembly (28) from filter assembly (29) .

  1. Disconnect harness assembly (30) from transmission (31) .

  1. Disconnect harness assemblies (33) .

  1. Remove bolts (34) and cable straps (32). Move harness assemblies (33) out of the way.

  1. Disconnect harness assembly (35) from the coolant sensor.

  1. Disconnect harness assemblies (37) from alternator (36) .

  1. Remove the bolt and ground cable (38) from the engine.

  1. Remove bolt (39) and cable assembly (40) from both sides of the engine.

  1. Disconnect harness assemblies (41) and (42) .

  1. Disconnect hose assemblies (43). Remove cable straps and move valve (13) out of the way.

  1. Disconnect hose assemblies (45) and (46) .

  1. Remove filter assembly (44) .

  1. Drain transmission (31) into a suitable container. The capacity of transmission (31) is approximately 24 L (6.3 US gal). Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Transmission Oil and Filter - Change".

  1. Disconnect hose assembly (47) .

  1. Disconnect harness assembly (48) .

  1. Remove bolts (51) and two indicator plates (50). Disconnect drive shaft (49) from transmission (31) .

  1. Remove clamp (52) and drain hoses (53) .

  1. Remove drain hose (54) .

  1. Attach Tooling (A) to the engine and transmission (55), as shown.

  1. Remove bolts (56). Remove the engine and transmission (55) as a unit. The weight of the engine and transmission (55) is approximately 873 kg (1924 lb).

  1. Remove mounts (57) .
