533 and 543 Wheel Feller Bunchers Caterpillar

Monitoring System

Usage:

543 ASJ
The Caterpillar Monitoring System performs an automatic internal test when the machine is activated. Turning the engine start switch from the OFF position to the ON position will activate the test.

The test verifies proper operation of the outputs (displays, indicator lamps, and audible alarms).

The internal circuits are automatically checked.

The operator must observe the outputs in order to determine whether the displays are operating properly. The length of time for the test is approximately three seconds.

During this test, all alert indicators flash. Also, the display window shows the following information:

  • All units of measurement (degrees Celsius, kPa, miles, km, rpm, and liters)

  • "X10" indicator

  • Symbol for hour meter

  • "8.8.8.X.8.8." on the digital readout

The gauge needles ramp straight up. Then, the gauge needles go to the right and to the left. The gauge needles then go to the final position.

  • The audible alarm sounds once.

The display then goes into the Normal Mode of operation or the display scrolls through the modes if the service input and the clear input are grounded or the operator switch input is grounded.

Caterpillar Monitoring System

The Caterpillar Monitoring System consists of four warning categories. The first category requires only operator awareness. The second warning category requires an operator response in order to correct the warning condition. The third warning category is considered severe. An immediate change in operating techniques is required. The fourth warning category requires immediate shutdown of the machine systems.

Warning Category 1

In this category, only the alert indicators will flash. The warning requires attention from the operator. The warning identifies the system in need of attention.

Low Engine Oil Pressure (2) - The engine oil pressure is low. The alert indicator should flash during start-up. The alert indicator should go out shortly after start-up.

Parking Brake (3) - The parking brake is engaged. The alert indicator should flash during start-up. The alert indicator should go out when the parking brake is released.

Electrical System (5) - There is a malfunction in the electrical system. The system voltage is too high for normal machine operation or the system voltage is too low for normal machine operation.

If the electrical loads (air conditioning and/or lighting) are high and the engine speed is low, then increase the engine speed. This will generate more output from the alternator. If the alert indicator for the electrical system turns off within one minute, the electrical system is operating normally. Overload can occur during periods of low engine speeds.

Revise the operating cycle in order to avoid overloading the electrical system. Overloading the electrical system could result in discharging the batteries.

Low idle must be correct. Adjust the idle setting to the high side of low idle when the most common electrical loads are turned on. Reducing loads will also help.

If the alert indicator remains on during normal operating speeds and with light electrical loads, stop the machine and investigate the cause of the fault. The fault may be caused by an alternator belt that is loose or broken. Also, the batteries or the alternator may be faulty.

Hydrostatic Transmission Oil Temperature (6) - The hydrostatic transmission oil temperature is too high. Change the operating technique in order to prevent damage to the machine.

Hydraulic Oil Temperature (7) - The hydraulic oil temperature is above 87 °C (188 °F). Reduce the load on the system. If the temperature remains high, stop the machine and investigate the cause of the fault.

Differential Lock (9) - The differential lock is engaged.

Air Inlet Heater (12) - The air inlet heater is on. When the indicator turns off, you can start the engine.

Fuel Level (17) - This gauge indicates the fuel level. If the gauge needle is in the red area, fuel level is less than 5%. Stop the machine and refuel as soon as possible.

Warning Category 2

In this category, action lamp (14) will flash. A change in machine operation is required in order to reduce excessive temperature in one or more of the systems. The action alarm will not sound with a warning category 2.

If you have investigated the cause of the problem but the alert indicator and the action lamp continue to flash, do not operate the machine.

Clogged Hydraulic Oil Filter (4) - The alert indicator indicates a plugged hydraulic oil filter. Change the hydraulic oil filter. If this alert indicator flashes during operation, stop the machine immediately and engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and investigate the cause of the fault.

Hydrostatic Transmission Oil Temperature (6) - The hydrostatic transmission oil temperature is too high. Change the operation of the machine in order to prevent damage to the machine. If the temperature remains high, stop the machine and investigate the cause of the fault.

High Hydraulic Oil Temperature (7) - The hydraulic oil temperature is above 90 °C (194 °F). Change the operation of the machine. If the temperature remains high, stop the machine and investigate the cause of the fault.

Low Hydraulic Oil Level (11) - The hydraulic oil level is low. If this alert indicator flashes during operation, stop the machine immediately and engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and investigate the cause of the fault.

Engine Coolant Temperature (13) - This gauge indicates excessive coolant temperature. If the gauge needle is in the red area, stop the machine and investigate the cause of the fault.

Hydraulic Oil Temperature (15) - The gauge indicates excessive hydraulic oil temperature. If the gauge needle is in the red area, reduce the load on the system. If the gauge needle remains in the red area, stop the machine and investigate the cause of the fault.

Hydraulic Oil Pressure for Disc Saw (16) - The gauge indicates that the hydraulic pressure for the disc saw is too high. If the gauge needle is in the red area, reduce the load on the system. If the gauge needle remains in the red area, stop the machine and investigate the cause of the fault.

Warning Category "2-S"

The warning category "2-S" includes a constant alarm. Warning category "2-S" includes all warnings in category 2. The warning category "2-S" is a severe condition. The operator should immediately change the operating procedures in order to prevent damage to the machine. When the correct measures have been taken, the alarm will stop. A category "2-S" is logged.

The alert indicator indicates that one of the travel pedals is pressed while the hydraulic lockout control for the hydraulic controls is in the LOCKED position.

Warning Category 3

In this category, the alert indicator and the action lamp will flash and the action alarm will sound intermittently. Immediate shutdown of the machine is required in order to prevent severe damage to the heating system and/or severe damage to the machine.

Do not operate the machine until the fault has been corrected.

Low Engine Oil Pressure (2) - The alert indicator indicates low oil pressure. If this alert indicator flashes, stop the machine immediately and engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and investigate the cause of the fault.

Electrical System (5) - The alert indicator indicates a serious malfunction in the electrical system. If this alert indicator flashes during operation, stop the machine immediately and engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and investigate the cause of the fault.

Low Brake Oil Pressure (8) - The warning light indicates low oil pressure to the brakes. If this alert indicator flashes, then stop the machine immediately and engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and investigate the cause of the fault.

For the brake system, a Warning Category 3 occurs when there is a loss of brake oil pressure in the system. This causes low oil pressure indicator (8) for the brake system to turn on. A Warning Category 3 also occurs if the machine is in operation and the parking brake becomes engaged.

When a Warning Category 3 occurs during machine operation, stop the machine immediately and engage the parking brake. Stop the engine. Investigate the cause of the warning before returning the machine to service.

Note: DO NOT operate the machine until the cause of the warning has been corrected.

Diagnostic Codes
