Start By:

  1. Remove the tie rods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tie Rods - Remove and Install".

Note: SERVICE DATA: TOOLING (ZZ) WILL NOT BE IDENTIFIED IN PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE REMOVAL OR THE INSTALLATION. THIS TOOLING IS SHOWN IN ORDER TO ASSIST THE EXPERIENCED SERVICEMAN.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


Note: Put identification marks on all hoses, on all hose assemblies, on all wires, and on all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies. This helps to prevent fluid loss, and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.

  1. Disconnect hose assembly (1). Remove fitting (2) .

  1. Disconnect harness assembly (3). Disconnect hose assembly (4) .

  1. Loosen clamps (5). Remove sensor (6) .

    Note: Mark the position of sensor (6) for installation purposes.

  1. Remove bolts (7). Remove steering cylinder assembly (8). The weight of steering cylinder assembly (8) is approximately 20 kg (45 lb).

  1. Remove ball joints (9) from steering cylinder assembly (8.) .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install ball joints (9) onto the ends of steering cylinder assembly (8). Tighten ball joints (9) to a torque of 190 N·m (140 lb ft).

  1. Install steering cylinder assembly (8) into the axle housing. The weight of steering cylinder assembly (8) is approximately 20 kg (45 lb). Install bolts (7) .

  1. Install sensor (6). Tighten clamps (5) .

  1. Connect hose assembly (4). Connect harness assembly (3) .

  1. Install fitting (2). Connect hose assembly (1) .

End By: Install the tie rods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tie Rods - Remove and Install".
