Crankshaft - Remove
Removal Procedure
Start By:
- Remove the engine oil pan. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pan - Remove and Install".
- Remove the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Housing (Front) - Remove".
- Remove the flywheel housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel Housing - Remove and Install".

Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
- Rotate the crankshaft.
- Remove main bearing cap bolts (1) .

Note: Make sure that the main bearing caps and the connecting rod caps are marked for the location and direction for installation.
- Remove main bearing caps (2) from the cylinder block. Remove the bearings from the main bearing caps. Remove the lower thrust washers from the rear main bearing cap. Keep the main bearings with the respective main bearing cap.
- Remove nuts (3) from the connecting rod bolts.
- Remove connecting rod caps (4) from the connecting rods. Remove the bearings from the connecting rod caps. Keep the connecting rod bearings with the respective connecting rod cap.
- Push the piston assemblies into the cylinder bores.

Do not allow the connecting rods to strike the piston cooling jets. Damage or misalignment may occur. |
Note: Use tape or rubber tubing on the connecting rod bolts to protect the crankshaft journals from damage.
- Attach a suitable lifting device to the crankshaft. Lift the crankshaft out of the cylinder block. The weight of crankshaft (5) is approximately 32 kg (70 lb).
Note: Be careful not to damage the finished surfaces on the crankshaft.
- Remove upper main bearings (6). If necessary, remove the upper thrust washer from the rear of the cylinder block. Keep the upper main bearings with the respective main bearing caps.
