A Testing Procedure for the Automatic Burner Control{5700, 6642}

Usage:

8-16B 2JN
Asphalt Paver:
8-16B (S/N: 2JN1-UP; 7MR1-UP; BLK1-UP)
10-20B (S/N: 3HL1-UP; 2KN1-UP; 2LN1-UP; AGT1-UP)
10-20WB (S/N: 2MN1-UP; 3KL1-UP)

Introduction

This Special Instruction, REHS1613 provides information in order to test the voltage of the automatic burner control on the asphalt screeds. The ECM on the screed determines the amount of time that the glow plugs will be activated. The ECM activates the glow plugs. The battery voltage that is sent to the ECM will determine the activation period for the glow plugs. If the input voltage is 27 volts or more, the glow plugs will activate for 12 to 25 seconds. If the input voltage is 24 volts or less, the glow plugs will be activated for 25 seconds or more.

    (1) 40-pin connector

  1. Use a communication adapter and connect the laptop computer to the communication port on the automatic burner control that is located on the underside of the walkway. Use Winflash in order to determine the software version that is currently loaded on the ECM.

  1. If version 2.02 is not loaded on the computer, acquire a copy of the 187-2703 Burner Electronic Software from the Caterpillar Service Information System (SIS). Download the software from the laptop computer to the ECM on the screed. After you download the software, turn the master switch for the battery to the OFF position and to the ON position. Use the laptop computer in order to confirm the proper installation of the software.

  1. Start the engine and use a multimeter in order to check the voltage of the battery at HIGH idle and at LOW idle. The voltage should be greater than 27 volts. If the voltage is less than 27 volts, test the alternator and the battery for proper operation.

  1. Locate the 40-pin connector (1) that is attached to the ECM of the automatic burner control. The ECM for the automatic burner control is located under the walkway of the screed.

    (2) 7X-1715 Adapter Cable As

    (3) 9X-1314 Positive lead

    (4) 9X-1315 Negative lead

  1. Use the 7X-1715 Adapter Cable As (2) and a multimeter in order to check the voltage at wire 118-Gray and wire 200-Black.

    1. Insert 9X-1314 Positive lead (3) into connection 1 or 6 for wire 118-Gray.

    1. Insert 9X-1315 Negative lead (4) into connection 2 or 5 for wire 200-Black.

    1. Check the voltage at HIGH idle and at LOW idle. If the voltage is less by more than .5 volts of the voltage that was measured in Step 3, inspect the harness and inspect the electrical connections for loose wires.

    (5) Control switch

Note: Move control switch (5) to the OPERATE position in order for the automatic burner control to activate.

  1. Activate the automatic burner control. Observe the voltage while the burner system cycles through the ignition sequence. If a sudden drop in voltage occurs during the ignition sequence, investigate the components that are involved.

    (6) Electrical harness for the glow plug

    (7) Stud

  1. Check the activation period for the glow plug.

    1. Connect the multimeter to harness (6) for the glow plug or to stud (7) on the burner.

    1. Activate the automatic burner control.

    1. Observe the length of time that the glow plug is activated. If the voltage is in the normal range, the glow plug will be activated for 12 to 15 seconds. The glow plugs should not be activated for more than 15 seconds. If the activation period is much longer than 15 seconds, check the ECM for the proper installation of the software.

  1. If the voltage measurements are correct in the previous steps, check the glow plugs for the proper installation. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS1190, "Installation Procedure for the Burner Assembly Glow Plugs".

Cooling Cycle

After the heating cycle, the burners should cool down before the blowers are turned OFF. The cooling cycle for the burner system must be working in order to prevent damage to the flame detectors and the blower motors. During normal operation, the blower motors will remain activated for 15 minutes after you have turned the engine start switch to the OFF position. If the main disconnect switch is turned to the OFF position, the blower motors will not cycle. If the blower motors do not cycle, the flame detectors and the blower motors may fail due to overheating.
