Jake Brake Installation

Usage:

(1) Jake Brake.

NOTE: Later units have the Jake Brake housing sitting on the hex heads of stud (5), and the earlier version has the Jake Brake housing sitting on the rocker arm supports. Also the earlier Jake Brake stud (5) has a 12 mm hex head, whilethe later Jake Brake stud (5) has a 19 mm hex head. Note on the later units, the torque of studs (5) have been increased and the torque of nuts (4) have been decreased.


Identification Of Jake Brake (Earlier Or Later)

(2) Locknut. Tighten locknut to a torque of ... 35 ± 8 N·m (25 ± 6 lb ft)

(3) Screw. (Adjustment for slave piston setting).

(4) Nut. Tighten hold-down nuts to ... 95 ± 15 N·m (70 ± 11 lb ft)

On later units, torque the nuts to ... 80 ± 15 N·m (59 ± 11 lb ft)

(5) Prior to installation of Jake Brake, install studs and tighten to a torque of ... 55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7 lb ft)

On later units, torque the studs to ... 95 ± 15 N·m (70 ± 11 lb ft)

(6) Slave piston.

(7) Slave piston lash setting ... 1.143 mm (.045 in)

Adjust slave piston lash with the engine stopped. The exhaust valves must be closed on the cylinder to be adjusted. See the topic, Jake Brake Adjustment, in the Testing and Adjusting section of Systems Operation,Testing And Adjusting, Form No. SENR3909.

(8) Exhaust bridge assembly.

(9) Actuating pin.

(10) Intake valve.

(11) Exhaust valve.

(12) Bolt. Tighten to a torque of ... 55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7 lb ft)

(13) Spacer. Tighten to a torque of ... 95 ± 15 N·m (70 ± 11 lb ft)

(14) Bolt. Tighten to a torque of ... 95 ± 15 N·m (70 ± 11 lb ft)

(15) Head bolt stud. Tighten to a torque of ... 275 ± 15 N·m (200 ± 11 lb ft)

(16) Locknut (exhaust and intake rocker arm). Tighten to a torque ... of 25 ± 7 N·m (18 ± 5 lb ft)

(17) Adjusting screw (intake bridge).

(18) Intake bridge assembly.

(19) Locknut. Tighten locknut to a torque of ... 25 ± 7 N·m (18 ± 5 lb ft)

(20) Adjusting screw (exhaust bridge).
