NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Note: Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "General Information (Reference Material)" for more information.

  1. Use Tooling (A) to be sure that bridge dowels (5) are straight and installed to a height of 105.0 ± 2.0 mm (4.10 ± 0.08 inch) above the surface of cylinder head (6). If installation of the bridge dowels is necessary, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Assemble".

  1. Apply Tooling (B) to the bridge dowels and apply Tooling (B) to the bore of each valve bridge (3). Install the valve bridges in the original location and loosen the adjustment screws.

  1. Use the procedure which follows to adjust the valve bridges.

    1. Apply clean engine oil in the lubrication passage of the valve bridge (hole in top surface of cast web).

    1. Back off the adjustment screw and press straight down on the top contact surface of valve bridge (3) with a force of 50 ± 10 N (11 ± 2 lb ft).

    1. Turn the adjustment screw clockwise until the adjustment screw contacts the valve stem. A light touch is required to determine when contact is made.

    1. Turn the screw for an additional 45 ± 5 degrees in order to equalize clearance with the dowel. This is 1/8 of a turn.

    1. Hold the adjustment screw in this position and tighten the locknut to a torque of 100 ± 15 N·m (75 ± 11 lb ft).

    1. Do this procedure for both valve bridges. Apply Tooling (B) to the top contact of both valve bridges and the unit injector.

    1. Apply clean engine oil to each end of pushrods (4) and install the pushrods in the valve lifters. Install the pushrods in the original location.

      NOTICE

Do not tighten the rocker arm shaft bolts until the rocker arm adjusting screws are loosened. Bent valves can result if the valves contact the pistons.

    1. Place rocker arm assembly (2) on the rocker arm support.

    1. Be sure that the sockets of the pushrods are engaged with the ball screws on the rocker arm.

    1. Loosen adjusting screws (7) on the rocker arms.

    1. While you are tightening bolts (1) that hold rocker arm assembly (2) to the rocker arm support to a torque of 430 ± 60 N·m (317 ± 44 lb ft) with a torque wrench, use a pry bar in order to keep the rocker arm shaft centered on the rocker arm support.

    1. Adjust the valve clearance. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Valve Lash and Valve Bridge Adjustment".

    1. Adjust the fuel injector timing. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Timing".

End By: Install the valve cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Cover Base - Remove and Install".
