R2900 Load Haul Dump Caterpillar

Parking Brake Manual Release

Usage:

R2900 5TW

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from a brake malfunction. Do not operate the machine if the brake was applied due to a malfunction of the oil system or the brake.

Correct any problem before attempting to operate the machine.

----------------------

Note: Certain Caterpillar machines may be equipped with an optional Automatic Brake Application (ABA) system. The ABA system warns the operator of an impending brake application (low transmission oil pressure) and engages the parking brake if the pressure further decreases (for example, if the engine stalled). If your machine is equipped with the optional ABA system, a loop wire needs to be connected to the wiring harness of a transmission oil pressure switch to enable the brake release function to operate.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: Perform Steps 1 and 16 of the following procedure only to machines fitted with the optional Automatic Brake Application (ABA) system.

Location of the transmission oil pressure switch

(1) Transmission oil pressure switch (ABA)

(2) Loop wire

  1. Disconnect the transmission wiring harness from the 6T-6652 Pressure Switch (1) at the wiring connector. Connect loop wire (2) between the EL331 blue wire and the EL330 grey wire of the transmission harness, as shown.

    1DE3048 Portable Hydraulic Pump

    (3) Receptacle

  1. Connect plug (3) of the 1DE3048 Portable Hydraulic Pump to the machine's 24 volt DC power supply.

Note: The machine batteries must be fully charged for the operation of the portable hydraulic pump. If battery charge is low, connect to an external 24 volt DC power supply.

  1. Depress the service brake pedal at least fifty times to release the oil pressure from the brake hydraulic system.

  1. With the operator station door closed, move the joystick control lever to all positions to release any pressure in the implement pilot system.

  1. Move the STIC steering control several times in both directions to remove any pressure in the steering hydraulic system.

  1. Press and hold the breaker relief valve to remove any pressure in the hydraulic tank.

Location of the quick connect coupler

    (5) Quick connect coupler

  1. Remove the caps from quick connect couplers (4) and (5). Connect the hydraulic hoses from the portable hydraulic pump to quick connect couplers (4) and (5) .

  1. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.

  1. Turn the engine start switch to the ON position.

    Illustration 5g00953148

  1. Position switch (6) from the portable hydraulic pump inside the operator's compartment.

  1. Press and hold switch (6) in the ON position to activate the portable hydraulic pump. Brake accumulator oil pressure indicator (7) will go out when the braking system has full oil pressure.

Note: Operation of switch (6) should only take place from inside the operator's station. Observe brake indicators and gauges (if equipped) while operating the portable hydraulic pump.

    Illustration 6g00953157

  1. When the braking system has full oil pressure, move parking brake control (8) to the OFF position to disengage the parking brake. Parking brake indicator (9) on the monitoring system panel should go out when the parking brake is disengaged.

Note: The service brakes can be used to stop the machine when the machine has brake oil pressure. Use the service brakes to control the machine when the machine is being towed.

Note: Using the service brakes will cause the braking system oil pressure to decrease. If brake accumulator oil pressure indicator (7) comes on, operate the portable hydraulic pump to increase the braking system pressure. Ensure that the braking system pressure is maintained for the duration of the towing.

    NOTICE

Operating the portable hydraulic pump for extended periods of time may cause overheating and possible damage of the electric motor. If overheating is observed, stop operating the portable hydraulic pump and allow it time to cool before towing is continued.

Note: For the removal of the portable hydraulic pump from the machine refer to Steps 13 through 15.

  1. Repeat Steps 3 through 6.

  1. Disconnect and remove the portable hydraulic pump from the machine.

  1. Install the caps on the quick connect couplers.

  1. Remove the loop wire and reconnect the wiring connectors of the transmission oil pressure switch and the transmission wiring harness.

NOTICE

Inspect the machine thoroughly. Remove the loop wire (if fitted) and repair any damage before returning the machine to operation.
