Usage:
Introduction
The 115-4109 (Dry) and 115-4120 (Wet) Crankshaft Seals are a new design (combination seal/sleeve) that service the 7C-3570 (dry), 7E-7589 Crankshaft Seal (wet) and 7C-7980 Wear Sleeve.
NOTE: The design of the 115-4109 (Dry) and 115-4120 (Wet) Crankshaft Seals require special handling, tooling and installation procedures.
Handling
Do NOT install the seal group if:
- * The seal has SEPARATED from the sleeve.
- * The seal group is NOT assembled when removed from the parts package.
- * The seal group appears to be DAMAGED in any way.
- * The seal group has been LUBRICATED.
NOTE: The seal group is designed to be installed DRY.
- * The seal group has been INSTALLED before.
- * The seal group is NOT assembled when removed from the parts package.
NOTE: Do Not install a seal group that has been used. Install ONLY new seal groups.
Tooling
The original seals are removed using the 1U-7600 Slide Puller Group and the new seal groups are installed with the 1U-7598 Seal Installation Group.
NOTE: The seal removal/installation may not require all the tools in the tool group.
Required Tools
Remove Crankshaft Rear Seal
NOTE: Refer to the Service Manual for the procedures to remove the flywheel.
1. Use a 1U-8145 Drill Bit and carefully drill three evenly spaced holes in seal (1).
NOTE: Drill the seal CAREFULLY to prevent damage to the rear flange surface of the crankshaft. The holes are to position the tools for the seal removal.
2. Install one 1P-3073 Screw Tip (2) on assembled Slide Hammer (3).
NOTE: Remove seal CAREFULLY by alternating the position of the 1U-7603 Hammer from hole to hole to hole. This will allow the seal to be removed evenly without damage to the rear flange surface of the crankshaft.
Crankshaft Salvage Wear Sleeve (If Equipped)
NOTE: A factory built engine does not have a wear sleeve.
Engine Equipped With Wear Sleeve
If the engine is equipped with a wear sleeve it could be either a:
- * 7C-7980, which is used in conjunction with a 7C-3570 (Dry) Crankshaft Seal .. or a
- * 7C-7589 (Wet) Crankshaft Seal .. or a
- * Wear sleeve that is part of a 115-4109 (Dry) Crankshaft or 115-4120 (Wet) Crankshaft Seal Group.
- * 7C-7589 (Wet) Crankshaft Seal .. or a
Seal/Wear Sleeve Identification
The wear sleeve can be identified by identifying the seal used.
The wear sleeve MUST be identified in order to use the correct tooling for the sleeve removal.
7C-3570 Crankshaft Seal Or 7C-7989 Crankshaft Seal
A 7C-3570 Crankshaft Seal Or 7C-7589 Crankshaft Seal is removed using a 4C-4869 Distorter Ring.
115-4109 Crankshaft Seal Or 115-4120 Crankshaft Seal
A 115-4109 Crankshaft Seal Or 115-4120 Crankshaft Seal is removed using a 5P-7314 Distorter Ring.
NOTICE |
---|
If the INCORRECT Distorter Ring is used: * The wear sleeve removal may be hampered or crankshaft damage could occur. |
Remove Crankshaft Wear Sleeve
1. Install 4C-4869 Distorter Ring or 5P-7314 Distorter Ring (1), depending on crankshaft seal removed, in the rear seal bore.
Turn 5P-7409 Distorter (2) until the edge of the tool makes a crease in the wear sleeve.
Repeat the turning procedure in two or three more locations on the wear sleeve or until the sleeve is loose.
3. Remove 5P-7409 Distorter (2), 4C-4869 Distorter Ring or 5P-7314 Distorter Ring (1) and wear sleeve.
Installing 115-4109 (Dry) and 115-4120 (Wet) Crankshaft Seals Using the 1U-7598 Installer Group
1. 9S-8858 Nut Assembly. 2. 1U-7594 Installer (Rear). 3. 1U-7597 Ring (Sleeve). 4. 1U-7596 Bolt (two). 5. 1U-7595 Locator Assembly (Rear).
1. Position Crankshaft Seal Group (6) on 1U-7597 Ring (3) with the inside diameter bevel of the crankshaft seal wear sleeve facing away from the 1U-7597 Ring.
NOTE: Do NOT install the crankshaft Seal Group if:
- * The seal has been separated from the sleeve.
- * The Seal Group is NOT assembled when removed from the parts package.
- * The Seal Group appears to be damaged in ANY way.
- * The seal has been LUBRICATED. The seal has been designed to be installed dry.
- * The Seal Group is NOT assembled when removed from the parts package.
Tighten 1U-7596 Bolts (4) LOOSELY (finger tight). This will allow the Seal Group and 1U-7597 Ring (3) to self align when installed.
3. Position Seal Group (6) with 1U-7597 Ring (3), as a unit, over 1U-7595 Locator Assembly (5) on the crankshaft.
Install 9S-8858 Nut Assembly (1) and tighten to install the Seal Group.
Turn 1U-7597 Ring (3) over and install 1U-7597 Ring (3), 1U-7594 Installer (2) and 9S-8858 Nut Assembly (1).
Tighten 9S-8858 Nut Assembly (1) to complete installation of the crankshaft Seal Group.
Inspect 1U-7597 Ring (3) and 1U-7595 Locator Assembly (5).
Properly installed 1U-7597 Ring (3) and 1U-7595 Locator Assembly (5). The faces are to be flush.
NOTE: If the crankshaft seal and sleeve are properly installed 1U-7597 Ring (3) and 1U-7595 Locator Assembly (5) faces will be flush.
8. Install Flywheel.
