Installation of 4C8246 Dial Indicator to 4C8242 Gage Base Assembly{0760} Caterpillar

Installation of 4C8246 Dial Indicator to 4C8242 Gage Base Assembly{0760}

Usage:

Introduction

The 4C8242 Base Assembly (without indicator) has been made available to customers that already have a 4C8246 Dial Indicator. The 8T5207 (canceled) and 4C8241 Valve Lash Indicators come with the 4C8246 Dial Indicator.

This Special Instruction provides the procedure to install the 4C8246 Dial Indicator onto the 4C8242 Base Assembly.

Items Needed

Installation

(1) 4C8246 Dial Indicator. (2) Indicator Stem. (3) Retainer Bushing. (4) Spring Washer. (5) Snap Ring. (6) Spindle. (7) Contact Point. (8) Inner Sleeve Foot. (9) Outer Sleeve Foot. (10) 4C8242 Base Assembly. (11) Mounting Bracket.

1. Clean dial indicator stem (2) and bore of retainer bushing (3) with 8T9011 Component Cleaner. Allow to dry thoroughly.

2. Apply 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer to indicator stem (2) and bushing bore (3). Allow to dry thoroughly.

NOTICE

Do not allow bearing mount or LOCTITE® 680 to come in contact with indicator spindle (6). A light coating of oil on the spindle will protect the spindle from adhesion. Adhesion of the spindle to the mounting stem will render the indicator useless.

3. Apply a light coating of 7M7456 Bearing Mount or LOCTITE® 680 to indicator stem (2) only. Do not coat the inside bore of retainer bushing (3). Only coat the area of the stem that will contact the bushing inner bore.

4. Hold the dial indicator with mounting stem (2) pointing up. Slip retainer bushing (3) over the stem until the bottom of the stem contacts the bottom of the bushing bore.

5. Assemble retainer bushing (3) to mounting stem (2) with a twisting motion to insure spreading of the adhesive.

6. Wipe away any excess adhesive.

7. Check to make sure that the bottom of the mounting stem of the indicator contacts the bottom of the bushing bore.

8. Position the indicator with the mounting stem (2) in the upright position while the bearing mount hardens. Allow the bearing mount to harden for a minimum of two hours.

9. After the bearing mount has hardened, assemble the dial indicator to the 4C8242 Base Assembly (10).

10. For easier assembly, clamp inner sleeve foot (8) to outer sleeve foot (9) with a C-clamp or an 8H8582 Vise Grip. Do not over tighten and damage the unit.

11. Place spring washer (4) over retainer bushing (3).

12. Install the indicator/bushing/spring washer assembly into the bore of mounting bracket (11).

Compress the spring washer and install snap ring (5) into the ring groove of the bushing. This will retain the dial indicator to the mounting bracket and allow the indicator to be rotated for improved viewing.

13. Install contact point (7) into spindle (6).

14. Remove the clamping device from sleeve feet (8) and (9).

The unit is now ready for use.
