The piston ring system consists of two parts: a rubber oval expander ring and a plastic ring. The following assembly instructions are provided to insure optimum seal life:

Note: DO NOT TRIM THIS SEAL. The ring seal is designed to be larger than the bore that is being sealed. This results in an interference fit at assembly. Any change of the ring seal will affect the sealing ability of the ring seal.

  1. Inspect piston for sharp edges, nicks, gouges, and/or dirt which will be detrimental. Repair and/or clean the areas.

  2. Apply a film of hydraulic fluid to the oval expander ring and the piston ring.

  3. Stretch the expander ring over the piston until the expander ring is located in the piston ring groove. The expander ring must lay flat.

  4. Before installing piston ring onto piston, place the piston ring into the bore. Ends of ring have been designed to overlap, thus producing an interference assembly. Do Not Cut Down Rings.

  5. Place the piston ring over the piston. Make sure to expand the diameter of the ring only enough to slip over the piston body. Excessive stretching can weaken the piston ring.

  6. Check lead in the chamfer and the cylinder bore. Both should be free of nicks and gouges. Repair if necessary.

  7. Lubricate the cylinder bore with a film of hydraulic fluid.

Note: In order to prevent possible damage during installation of the piston in the cylinder bore, the joint face of the ring seal should be positioned opposite the cylinder port.

  8. Install the piston into the cylinder bore so that the piston ring step joint is opposite the cylinder port. During the assembly it is important that the piston ring remains located in the ring groove.

  9. The assembly is now complete.

Note: The piston ring system is a precision machined unit that is manufactured for a specified bore and groove dimension. Any alteration of either of the component parts as received, or subsequent dimensional changes, will be detrimental to the sealing capability.
