Introduction
This Special Instruction provides the instructions that are needed to install the 193-4472 Upper Link . This Special Instruction also provides the procedure that is needed to reinforce the connection point at the quick hitch and the 3W-7235 Support for the new upper link.
A tractor that is used in heavy-duty applications can benefit from the more rugged upper link and reinforced connecting points. This will improve the reliability and durability of the hitch.

Removal of the Hitch from the Tractor
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Accidental machine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the machine. To avoid accidental machine starting, turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and remove the key. If the machine is not equipped with a battery disconnect switch, disconnect the battery cables from the battery and tape the battery clamps. Place a do not operate tag at the battery disconnect switch location to inform personnel that the machine is being worked on. |
Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under presure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. |
Reference: See Disassembly and Assembly, SENR1743, "Machine Systems" for the information that is needed to remove the three-point hitch from the tractor.
Reinforcement and Installation Procedure
- After you remove the hitch from the tractor, remove the existing upper link and remove the upper hook. Also, remove any hydraulic lines that would interfere with the following machining and welding processes.
- Use a cutting torch to cut dimension (A) in 3W-7235 Support (12) .

(A) 152.0 ± 1.0 mm (5.10 ± 0.040 inch) |
- Cut out dimension (A) so that the opening is flush with the top of 3W-7211 Channel (13) .
Illustration 4 | g00837239 |
- Tack weld strap (14) to bracket (7). This will keep the bores aligned when you weld the bracket to support (12) .
Illustration 5 | g00837255 |
- Position bracket (7) on support (12).
Illustration 6 | g00839876 |
- Make sure that bracket (7) is positioned on support (12) per dimension (B) .

- Allow all the parts to cool. Then remove strap (14) from bracket (7) .
- Remove 121-2348 Plates (15) from 104-3463 Quick Hitch (16) .

- Position plate assembly (9) and plate assembly (8) on quick hitch (16) .
Illustration 11 | g00837403 |
- Install the following parts through plate assemblies (8) and (9) :
Note: The following parts will help to hold dimension (D) that is shown in Illustration 12.
- One pin assembly (2)
- One spacer (3)
- One washer (10)
- One bolt (11)
- One pin assembly (2)
- Tack weld plate assemblies (8) and (9) .
- Tack weld straps (18) in order to hold dimension (D). See Illustration 12.
- Make sure that you hold the distance between plate assembly (8) and plate assembly (9) to dimension (D) .

Top View (D) 66.0 ± 1.5 mm (2.60 ± 0.06 inch) |
- Position plate (4) and plate (5). Use clamps (19), as shown. Tack weld the two plates.
Illustration 13 | g00837477 |
- Position two plates (6), as shown. Use four clamps (20) and plate (21) to position two plates (6). Put a 2 mm (0.08 inch) spacer between plate (21) and plate (6). This spacer is necessary in order to hold dimension (F) between plate (6) and surface (E). See Illustration 15.
