NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Verify that all of the components of the radiator are clean and free of foreign material prior to installation.

  1. Inspect all components for wear. Replace the components that are worn or damaged. Use new gaskets and seals when you install the radiator.

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device to radiator (28). Position radiator (28) on the machine. The radiator weighs approximately 480 kg (1058 lb).

  1. Install two bolts (29) and the washers at each side of radiator (28) .

  1. Install two bolts (26) that secure clips and heater hoses (27) to the bottom of the radiator.

  1. Install tie straps (24) that secure wiring harness (25) to the left side of the radiator.

  1. Install four upper bolts (23) and the spacers that secure fan guard (23) around the fan spider.

  1. Install four lower bolts (21) that secure fan guard (23) around the fan spider.

  1. Install two bolts (19) that hold step assembly (20) to the top left side of the radiator.

  1. Install bolt (18) that secures the clip and the hose to the left side of the radiator. Install bolt (16) that secures refrigerant accumulator (17) to the left side of the radiator.

  1. Install bolt (14) that holds refrigerant dryer (15) to the left side of the radiator.

  1. Route wiring harness (12) along the top of the radiator and along the right side platform. Secure the harness with tie straps (13) .

  1. Connect wiring harness (12) at the headlamps on the right side of the machine.

  1. Use three bolts (10) to install baffle assembly (11) at the bottom of the radiator.

  1. Install two bolts, and four clips (8) to secure two hoses (9) at the top of the radiator.

  1. Use a new gasket, four bolts (6), and the washers to connect elbow (7) at the lower left side of the radiator.

  1. Use a new gasket, four bolts (4), and the washers to connect elbow (5) at the lower right side of the radiator.

  1. Make sure that Tooling (A) is in position under the frame, as shown.

    Note: Tooling (A) will ease installation of the tube assembly.

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device (not shown) to tube assembly (1). Position tube assembly (1) on the machine. Install shims (3) and bolts (2) at each end of the tube assembly. Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 120 ± 20 N·m (89 ± 145 lb ft). The tube assembly weighs approximately 26 kg (57 lb).

  1. Remove Tooling (A) .

End By:

  1. Install the ether starting aid. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Ether Starting Aid - Remove and Install".
  2. Install the crankcase guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankcase Guard - Remove and Install".
  3. Install the refrigerant condenser. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Refrigerant Condensor - Remove and Install".
  4. Install the aftercooler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Aftercooler - Install".
  5. Fill the radiator with coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change".
