Introduction

This Special Instruction contains assembly information for the installation kits that are required when you install turbine precleaners in certain applications. The kits allow the installation of turbine precleaners on products that are equipped with dust ejector systems. This Special Instruction includes the following topics:

  • a general procedure for removing the existing parts

  • instructions for assembling the installation kit and precleaner

  • a checklist for testing the restriction after installing the precleaner

Do not perform any of the procedures until you thoroughly read the information in this Special Instruction.

Refer to the appropriate module of the Service Manual for complete disassembly and assembly information.

Refer to PELE0844, "TURBINE PRE-CLEANER ADAPTER KITS AVAILABLE FOR MACHINES WITH DUST EJECTORS" for the diameter of the air inlet pipe and the diameter of the air cleaner inlet.

Removal of Existing Parts

  1. Remove the dust ejector hose from the dust ejector system. Remove the dust ejector hose from the muffler.

Note: If the dust ejector hose connects to the exhaust extension, proceed with Step 2. If the dust ejector hose connects to the muffler, proceed with Step 4.

  2. Remove the exhaust extension which has the port for the dust ejector hose. Replace the exhaust extension with a length of straight tubing. The installation kit does not include the straight tubing.

  3. Remove the rain cap from the original exhaust extension. Install the rain cap on the new exhaust extension.

    (4) Gasket
    (5) Flange

  4. Close the port in the muffler. The port will be either a flange with a hole, or the port will be a round hole. If the port has a flange, cap the port with the bolts (1), washers (2), cap (3), and gasket (4). The installation kit includes the parts. Refer to Illustration 1. If the port is a round hole, use an appropriate plug to close the hole.

  5. Loosen the clamp that secures the dust ejector to the air filter housing. Remove the dust ejector from the machine.

(7) Turbine Precleaner

  1. Compare the diameter of the new air inlet pipe (3) to the diameter of the air cleaner inlet. If necessary, install the rubber insert (1) on the air cleaner inlet.

  2. Install the new air inlet pipe (3) on the air cleaner inlet or on the rubber insert (1). Tighten the clamp (2) to secure the air inlet pipe.

  3. Install the dust boot (4) on the air inlet pipe (3). Allow the dust boot to rest on the hood.

Note: If you are installing a 206-7515 Installation Kit, proceed to Step 5. If you are installing a 206-7517 Installation Kit, proceed to Step 4.

  4. Install a rubber insert (5) in the turbine precleaner (7).

  5. Place a clamp (6) on the turbine precleaner (7). Install the turbine precleaner on the air inlet pipe. Tighten the clamp to secure the turbine precleaner to the air inlet pipe.

  1. Install the air inlet adapter (2) on the air cleaner inlet. Use a clamp (1) to secure the air inlet adapter on the air cleaner.

  2. Install the air inlet pipe (4) which is included in the kit on the air inlet adapter. Use a clamp (3) to secure the air inlet pipe on the air inlet adapter.

  3. Install the dust boot (5) on the air inlet pipe (4). Allow the dust boot to rest on the hood.

  4. Place the clamp (6) on the turbine precleaner (7). Install the turbine precleaner on the air inlet pipe. Tighten the clamp to secure the turbine precleaner to the air inlet pipe.

Checklist for Turbine Precleaner Installations

  1. Make sure that all the connections are tight.

  2. Replace all the air filters.

  3. Start the engine. Run the engine at full load for three to five seconds.

  4. Check the restriction gauge. If the restriction is within specifications, the installation is complete.

  5. If the gauge indicates high restriction, shut off the engine. Inspect the precleaner. Make sure that no packaging materials remain in the unit. Check for proper sizing of the turbine precleaner. If the restriction remains high, contact your Caterpillar Service Engineer.
