Schematic of the Solenoid Valve (Lockup Clutch)

This diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM reads the voltage of the solenoid circuit as being above normal.

The possible causes for this diagnostic code are listed:

  • The circuit of the solenoid is shorted to the +battery circuit.

  • The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.

Note: Ensure that the CID 0709 FMI 03 for the solenoid is on hold and that the "SERV CODE" indicator is showing "SERV CODE".

Test Step 1. CHECK THE SOLENOID CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE +BATTERY CIRCUIT.

  1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the machine harness from the solenoid.

  1. Disconnect the machine harness connectors J1 and J2 from the ECM.

  1. At machine harness connector J1 and J2, measure the resistance. Measure the resistance from the signal contact J2-60 (wire 705-PK) to all possible sources of the +battery circuit. The possible sources of positive voltage are contacts: 725 and 730 machines J1-11, J1-58, J2-1, J2-15, J2-16, J2-17, J2-23, J2-25, J1-39, J2-40, J2-44, J2-45, J2-47, J2-51, J2-57, J2-58, J2-60, J2-62, J2-63, J2-64, J2-65, J2-68 and J2-70. 735 machines J1-11, J1-58, J2-1, J2-14, J2-15, J2-16, J2-17, J2-23, J2-25, J1-39, J2-40, J2-44, J2-45, J2-47, J2-51, J2-57, J2-58, J2-60, J2-61, J2-62, J2-63, J2-64, J2-65, J2-68 and J2-70. 740 machines J1-11, J1-58, J2-1, J2-14, J2-15, J2-16, J2-17, J2-23, J2-25, J1-39, J2-40, J2-44, J2-45, J2-47, J2-55, J2-57, J2-58, J2-60, J2-68 and J2-70.

Expected Result:

The resistance should be greater than 5000 ohms for each measurement.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to test step 2.

  • NOT OK - The resistance is NOT correct. There is a short in the machine harness. The short is between signal contact J2-60 (wire 705-PK) and the circuit with the low resistance measurement.

Repair: Repair the harness or replace the harness.

    Stop.

Test Step 2. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE REMAINS.

  1. Inspect the contacts and clean the contacts of the harness connectors.

  1. Reconnect all harness connectors.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Enter service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System and clear all inactive diagnostic codes.

  1. Operate the machine.

  1. Observe the status of the diagnostic code for the solenoid.

Expected Result:

The diagnostic code for the solenoid is NOT present. The "SERV CODE" is NOT showing.

Results:

  • YES - The diagnostic code is NOT present. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation. Stop.

  • NO - The diagnostic code has not been corrected. The ECM has failed.

Repair: It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this diagnostic code procedure again. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the ECM. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    Stop.
