(1) Feed roller chains. (2) Cover plate. (3) Bolts. |
The feed rollers are surrounded with chains (1). The chains should be inspected for wear and damage. Replace any damaged chains or broken chains.
When the first chain is broken, this chain should be replaced. The chains usually break at the end of the feed roller that faces the harvester head. When you replace a chain, change the direction of all other chains. The end of the chain that was facing the harvester head should now face away from the head. This will allow you to use the chains for approximately 800 hours more.
When a chain is found to be broken again, all of the chains should be replaced with new chains. When the chains are replaced, bolts (3) that hold cover plate (2) should also be replaced.
Periodically, check the feed roller chains for tension. The chains will develop slack as the rubber feed rollers wear down. Tighten any loose chains as soon as possible. The chains should be as tight as possible by using hand force in order to tighten the chains.

The individual lengths are held in place by two plates (2) that cover the ends of the chain lengths. The ends of the chains are retained by a groove (4) that is in the feed roller wheel.
Replacing Individual Chain Links

Secure the Harvester head in a vertical position in order to service the feed roller chains. Wrap a chain around the area that is shown. This is done in order to prevent the Harvester head from falling if the tilt cylinders fail.
It is possible for the frame of the harvester head to fall when it is parked in the vertical position. To avoid personal injury or death and equipment damage, wrap a chain around one leg of the frame and one leg of the yoke. Secure the chain in an appropriate manner. |
- The 164-5047 Chain Tool is used to replace the chains.
- Cut a piece of 161-8209 Chain to the appropriate length.
- Insert one end of the feed roller chain into the groove on the rear side of the feed roller.
- Wrap the chain around the feed roller. Keep the chain in the channel of the rubber tire on the feed roller.
- Install the chain (1) so that the chain is at a slight angle (A). The chain should be angled toward travel direction (8) of the feed roller.

- Place 164-5047 Chain Tool (7) onto chain (1). Pull the chain tightly. Insert the end of the chain into groove (4) on the front of the feed roller. Make sure that the chain is tight.
