Adjustment Procedure for End Play for the Upper Transfer Gear

The desired end play ... 0.05 ± 0.03 mm (0.002 ± 0.001 inch)

  1. Be sure that the bearing cups and the bearing cones are properly seated against the shoulders. Verify that the bearings are properly seated with a 0.038 mm (0.0015 inch) feeler gauge.

  1. Assemble the gear with the center in the vertical position. Assemble the bearing cup to the housing without shims (1).

Note: Be sure that the cage does not bind in the housing.

  1. Install two bolts that are located 180° from each other. Do not use self locking bolts for the setting procedure.

  1. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 20.3 N·m (15.00 lb ft). Rotate the shaft or rotate the gear for approximately 30° three to four times. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 40.7 N·m (30.00 lb ft). Rotate the shaft or rotate the gear for approximately 30° three to four times. Loosen the bolts without moving the shaft or gear. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 20.3 N·m (15.00 lb ft). Rotate the shaft or rotate the gear for approximately 30° three to four times. Repeat torque at 20.3 N·m (15.00 lb ft) until the bolt no longer turns.

  1. At one bolt, measure the gap between the housing and the bearing cage. Use a thickness feeler gauge to measure the gap in a radius from the center of the bolt. Record the measurement. Measure the second bolt in the same manner and record the measurement.

  1. Average the two measurements together. Add the constant to the average. The constant for the upper transfer gear is 0.41 mm (0.016 inch).

This number will be the thickness of shims (1) that is needed.

  1. Assemble the correct number of shims (1) and verify with a micrometer.

  1. Remove the bearing cup and assemble with the proper shims. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 105 ± 20 N·m (77 ± 15 lb ft).

Adjustment Procedure for End Play for the Idler Gear

The desired end play ... 0.05 ± 0.05 mm (0.002 ± 0.002 inch)

  1. Be sure that the bearing cups and the bearing cones are properly seated against the shoulders. Verify that the bearings are properly seated with a 0.038 mm (.0015 inch) feeler gauge.

  1. Assemble the gear with the center in the vertical position. Assemble the bearing cup to the housing without shims (2).

Note: Be sure that the cage does not bind in the housing.

  1. Install two bolts on opposite sides.

Loosen the bolts without moving the shaft. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 20.3 N·m (15.00 lb ft). Rotate the shaft or rotate the gear for approximately 30° three to four times. Repeat torque at 20.3 N·m (180 lb in) until the bolt no longer turns.

  1. At one bolt, measure the gap between the housing and the bearing cage. Use a feeler gauge to measure the gap in a radius from the center of the bolt and record the measurement. Measure the second bolt in the same manner and record the measurement.

  1. Average the two measurements together. Add the constant to the average. The constant for the idler gear is 0.46 mm (0.018 inch).

This number will be the thickness of shims (2) that is needed.

  1. Assemble the correct amount of shims (2) and verify with a micrometer.

  1. Remove the bearing cup and assemble with the proper shims (2). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 105 ± 20 N·m (77 ± 15 lb ft).
