Note: The following procedure must be used in order to put the correct amount of preload on the final drive bearings.

  1. Adjust the axle shaft bearing.

  1. Tighten 7I-5000 Ring (2) in order to preload the final drive bearings. Rotate the shaft and rap the sprockets while the 7I-5000 Ring is being tightened.

  1. The final rolling torque should be from 15 to 45 N·m (130 to 400 lb in).

Procedure for End Play Adjustment

  1. Measure the thickness of housing (4) at the four 12 mm puller holes in the bolt pattern. Average the thickness.

Note: Do not install seal (3) at this time.

  1. Remove all the existing shims. Bolt housing (4) in place with four evenly spaced bolts. Tighten the four bolts to 900 ± 100 N·m (664 ± 74 lb ft) in order to seat the parts. Loosen the four bolts. Tighten the four bolts to a torque of 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  1. Measure the depth to the differential housing through the four puller holes. Average the four numbers.

Note: The housing may have only two puller holes. In order to obtain the four measurements that are required, remount the housing 90° from the original position. Measure the depth of the housing again.

  1. Subtract the measurement in Step 1 from the measurement in Step 3 and add 0.060 mm (0.0024 inch).

  1. Remove housing (4) from the differential. Add the amount of shims that are necessary to equal the thickness in Step 4 within 0.020 mm (0.0008 inch).

Note: Install seal (3) at this time.

  1. Tighten 38 bolts (1) to a torque of 900 ± 100 N·m (664 ± 74 lb ft).
