Tandem Drive

Usage:

228 6BZ

Tandem Drive for 228 Skid Steer Loader

The tandem drive consists of the following major components:

  • Drive chains

  • Drive sprockets

  • Axles

  • Mounting hardware

Illustration 1g00597550

The tandem drive transfers mechanical power from the piston motors (hydrostatic) (1) to the axles (2) through the chains (3). Torque and speed from each motor is transferred to the chains by double drive sprockets (4) .

The inboard chains drive a single sprocket at the front axles. The outboard chains drive a single sprocket (5) at the rear axles. The sprockets have a gear ratio of 3 to 1. Rotational speed is decreased and torque is increased by this factor at the wheel spindles.

The chains are 80 series high strength drive chains. Lubrication is supplied by an oil bath of "10W30" oil in each drive chain box. The chains are dipped at the bottom of the axle sprockets as the chains rotate.

Proper adjustment for the chains is achieved when the total slack side movement is 12.5 ± 2.5 mm (0.492 ± 0.098 inch). Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7207-02, "Chain Drive Tension-Check/Adjust" for more information on adjusting the tandem drive.

As running time is accumulated on the drive train, the chains will elongate due to wear in the chain links. Adjustment slots are provided in the axle.

The double drive speockets (4) have 12 teeth. The axle sprockets (5) have 35 teeth. The sprocket teeth are heat treated in order to provide resistance to surface wear.

The axle sprockets (5) are attached to the spindles by internal splines, a hardened washer, and a bolt. Each axle sprocket has 23 internal splines.

The double drive sprockets (4) are attached to the hydraulic motors by internal splines, a retainer, and a bolt. Each motor sprocket contains 42 internal splines.

As running time is accumulated on the drive train, the chains will elongate due to wear in the chain links. Adjustment slots are provided in the axle.

The double drive speockets (4) have 13 teeth. The axle sprockets (5) have 27 teeth. The sprocket teeth are heat treated in order to provide resistance to surface wear.

The axle sprockets (5) are attached to the spindles by internal splines, a hardened washer, and a bolt. Each axle sprocket has 25 internal splines.

The double drive sprockets (4) are attached to the hydraulic motors by internal splines, a retainer, and a bolt. Each motor sprocket contains 56 internal splines.
