Electronic Control Module (Power Train) - Replace

Usage:

972G 1EW
Before the power train electronic control module (ECM) is replaced, ensure that replacement is absolutely necessary. The power train ECM is seldom the cause of a fault. Always check that power is available to the power train ECM. Battery voltage is required from contacts 1 and 6 to contacts 2 and 5 of the machine harness connector J1 for the power train ECM.

  1. Read the programmable system option settings (ride control, secondary steering, etc) from the power train ECM by using the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). Record these settings manually for programming the new power train ECM.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the machine harness from the power train ECM.

  1. Remove the power train ECM.

  1. Make sure that the new power train ECM that is being installed has the correct part number.

  1. Connect the machine harness to the power train ECM.

  1. Install the new power train ECM.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. If the correct software is not installed in the new power train ECM, use the ET to flash the correct software.

  1. Program the options (ride control, secondary steering, etc) via the ET.

  1. Calibrate the transmission.

Reference: For additional information on the power train electronic control module (ECM), refer to the Service Manual module Systems Operation, "Electronic Control Module (Power Train)" for the machine that is being serviced.

Reference: For information on calibrating the transmission, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Calibration and Programming" for the machine that is being serviced.
