The 1524 mm (60 inch) base is shown. |
(1) Torque for six bolts ... 60 ± 12 N·m (44 ± 9 lb ft)
(2) Apply 8T-9014 Silicone Sealant to the cover for the parking brake. The sealant must be located around the bolt holes.
Note: To ensure that the surfaces that are being sealed are free of oil, grease, and fuel, wipe the surfaces with a rag that has been soaked in isopropyl alcohol.
(3) Torque for sixteen bolts on each side ... 270 ± 40 N·m (200 ± 30 lb ft)
(4) Apply 8T-9014 Silicone Sealant to the cover assembly. The sealant must be located around the bolt holes.
Note: To ensure that the surfaces that are being sealed are free of oil, grease, and fuel, wipe the surfaces with a rag that has been soaked in isopropyl alcohol.

(6) Apply 6V-6640 RTV Silicone Sealant to both sides of the axle planetary ring gear. A thin film of the sealant must be located around the bolt holes. Do not use an excess amount of sealant.
Note: To ensure that the surfaces that are being sealed are free of oil, grease, and fuel, wipe the surfaces with a rag that has been soaked in isopropyl alcohol.
Procedure for Preloading the Bearing on the Axle Shaft
Note: All parts must be clean and free of dirt.
Illustration 3 | g00289914 |
- Use a induction type bearing heater to heat the outer bearing cone (10) to 150° ± 20°C (302° ± 36°F).
- Install outer bearing cone (10) onto axle (8). Make sure that the outer bearing cone (10) is seated against the shoulder of axle (8) .
Note: After installation, coat the outer bearing cone (10) with a thin film of SAE 10W30 oil.
- Install Duo-Cone seals (9) to axle (8) and housing (7) .
Note: The rubber toric seals and all surfaces that contact the seals must be clean and dry before assembly.
Note: Prior to assembly, apply a thin film of oil to the contacting surfaces of the metal seal rings.
Note: Ring seals must be assembled square with the bore and the toric ring. Twists and bulges of the ring seal can cause failures.
Note: Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS8364, "Installation of Conventional Duo-Cone Seals".
- Use a press in order to install the outer bearing cup (11) and the inner bearing cup (13) into the housing (7) .
Note: Make sure that the outer bearing cup (11) and the inner bearing cup (13) are seated against the shoulders of housing (7) .
- Position the axle (8) so that the end with the flange is facing downward. Install housing (7) onto axle (8) until the outer bearing cone (10) rests in outer bearing cup (11) .
- Use an induction type bearing heater to heat the inner bearing cone (12) to a temperature of 150° ± 20°C (302° ± 36°F).
- Install the heated inner bearing cone (12) onto axle (8) .
Note: After the inner bearing cone (12) has been installed onto axle (8) and the cone has cooled for approximately five to ten minutes, a small amount of end play should exist between the inner bearing cone (12) and the inner bearing cup (13) .
- Before measuring the rolling torque of the housing (7), pour a cup of SAE 10W-30 oil around the inner bearing cone (12) . The rolling torque is the Duo-Cone seal drag torque.
- Measure the rolling torque in order to have a value for the Duo-Cone seal drag torque. Record the value of the torque T.
The Duo-Cone seal drag torque should have a value within the following range. ... 12 ± 3 N·m (105 ± 25 lb in)
- Install the carrier (15) for the axle planetary ring gear to axle (8). Locate the carrier (15) against the inner bearing cone (12) .
- Use bolt (17) to install the retaining washer (14) to axle (8) and the carrier (15) .
- Slowly rotate housing (5) and apply torque to bolt (17). Tighten bolt (17) until the torque that is required to rotate housing (5) is equal to T plus 10 ± 2 N·m (85 ± 20 lb in). Torque T was determined in Step 9.
- Remove bolt (17) and remove the retaining washer (14) .
- Use a depth gauge to measure the gap A between the face on the carrier (15) and the axle (8) .
- If spacers are needed, install spacers in order to achieve a gap A with a tolerance of ± 0.025 mm (± .0010 inch).
Spacer thickness
- Install bolt (17) to washer (14) and to axle (8). Use 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound .
Torque for bolt (17) ... 600 ± 60 N·m (444 ± 44 lb ft)
- Install lock (16) to bolt (17). Use 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound .
- Measure the rolling torque. The rolling torque should equal torque T plus 10 ± 2 N·m (85 ± 20 lb in). Torque T was determined in Step 9. If the rolling torque is correct, proceed to Step 19.
Note: If the rolling torque is low, loosen bolt (17) and remove the thinnest spacer. Return to Step 12.
Note: If the rolling torque is high, remove bolt (17), washer (14), and the spacer. Apply a downward force to axle (8) in order to move the bearings upward. Repeat Step 12.
- Install bolt lock (16). Use 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound .
