Tie Rod (Steering) - Remove and Install

Start By:
- Install the wheel chocks. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel Chock (Front and Rear) - Remove and Install".
- Remove the cotter from the ballstud. Loosen slotted nut (2) that holds the ballstud and tie rod (1) in position. Loosen slotted nut (2) until there is a gap of approximately
6.4 mm (0.25 inch) .Show/hide tableIllustration 2 g01048342 - Position Tooling (A) between the steering link (3) and the steering arm (4). Strike Tooling (A) with a hammer until the ball stud is loose.
- Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the remaining end of tie rod (1).
- Remove slotted nuts (2). Use two people to remove tie rod (1). The weight of tie rod (1) is
25 kg (55 lb) .Show/hide tableIllustration 3 g01048355 - Remove fitting (7) from cover (6).
- Remove seal (10) from ball stud (9). Use a screwdriver to remove ring (5). Remove cover (6).
- Position the socket in a suitable press. Position a piece of pipe over ball stud (9) and against outer race (8).
- Press ball stud (9) and outer race (8) out of the socket.
- Repeat Steps 5 through 8 for the remaining ball stud.

- Verify that all of the components of the tie rod are clean and free of foreign material prior to installation.
- Inspect all components for wear or for damage. Replace the components, if necessary.

Illustration 4 g01048355 - Use a suitable press to install ball stud (9) and outer race (8) in the socket. Install cover (6). Use a screwdriver to install ring (5) on the socket. Install seal (10) over ball stud (9) with no lubricant.
- Install fitting (7) into cover (6).
- Apply Tooling (B) on the taper of ball stud (9).

6.35 ± 1.530 mm (0.25 ± .0602 inch) from the end of tie rod (1).Show/hide tableIllustration 7 g01048377 - Align the open Part (D) of clamp (11) with one of the Slots (C) in the end of Tie Rod (B).
- Tighten the bolt and the nut for clamp (11) to a torque of
285 N·m (210 lb ft) . - Install slotted nut (2). Tighten slotted nut (2) to a torque of
1360 N·m (1003 lb ft) . If the holes do not line up, advance slotted nut (2) to the next hole. - Install the cotter that holds slotted nut (2).
- Repeat Steps 3 through 11 for the other end of tie rod (1).
- Refer to Steering System Operation, Testing, and Adjusting, "Front Wheel - Align".
