------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.

------ WARNING! ------

Escaping fluid under pressure, even a pinhole size leak, can penetrate body tissue, causing serious injury, and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: Perform the Relief Valve (Charge) - Test and Adjust before you conduct the Relief Valve (Piston Pump) - Test and Adjust.

Note: Follow the same test procedure and the same adjustment procedure for the relief valves on the axle propel pump and the drum propel pump.

Before you conduct the test procedure on the main relief valves, the following steps must be performed:

  • Place the propel control lever in NEUTRAL position.

  • Place the machine in position against a solid, stationary object such as a loading dock. The wheels may be blocked and the drum may be blocked instead of placing the machine against a stationary object.

  • Make sure that the parking brake is applied.

  2. Disconnect one end of each balance line (8). Plug the balance lines and cap the fittings for the balance lines.

  3. Connect two pressure gauges to pressure test ports (2) and (5).

  4. Connect two pressure gauges to pressure test ports (6) and (10).

  5. Loosen the adjusting locknut (11) on the pressure override relief valve. Turn adjuster (12) clockwise for one half of a turn. Tighten the locknut (11).

  6. Release the parking brake.

  7. Move the speed selection switch to the HIGH SPEED position.

  8. Start the engine and run the engine at high idle.

  9. Move the propel control lever to the full FORWARD position. Read the pressure gauge at pressure test port (6) and (10). The pressure should be 48000 ± 1700 kPa (6960 ± 250 psi).

  10. If the relief valve pressure reading is not correct, the forward main relief valves (7) and (9) must be adjusted.

  11. If the relief valve pressure is not correct, the following steps must be done in order to adjust the main relief valves:

    1. Stop the engine.

    2. Remove the caps on the forward relief valves.

    3. Remove relief valve cartridges (13). Reinstall the caps on relief valves, so the oil does not leak during the adjustment to the cartridges.

    4. Clamp the cartridge in a soft vise jaw. See the arrows in illustration 4. Loosen locking setscrew (14) with a 3 mm allen wrench.

    5. Use a 5 mm wrench to turn spindle (16). The adjustment will be for the pressure. Turn the spindle clockwise in order to increase pressure. Turn the spindle counterclockwise in order to decrease pressure. One full revolution of spindle (16) equals 4400 kPa (638 psi).

    6. Tighten locking setscrew (14).

    7. Remove the relief valve (forward) from the vise.

    8. Reinstall the relief valve cartridges (7) and (9). Install the caps on the relief valves. Tighten to the torque specifications.

  12. Start the engine.

  13. Check the pressure at tap (6) and (10).

  14. If the forward relief valve setting is correct, move the propel control lever to the full REVERSE position. Read the pressure gauge at pressure test port (2) and (5). The pressure should be 48000 ± 1700 kPa (6960 ± 250 psi).

  15. If the relief valve pressure reading is not correct, the reverse relief valves must be adjusted.

  16. Stop the engine and locate the reverse relief valve (3) and (4). Follow Steps 11 through 12 in order to adjust the reverse relief valves.

  17. Recheck the pressure at test port (2) and (5).

  18. Stop the engine.

  19. Readjust the pressure override relief valve back to the original position. To readjust the pressure override relief valve, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Relief Valve (Pressure Override)".

  20. Remove plugs and reconnect brake line (1).
