Obtain the Sample and the Analysis

In addition to a good preventive maintenance program, Caterpillar recommends using S·O·S oil analysis at regular scheduled intervals in order to monitor the condition of the final drives.

Each oil sample should be taken when the oil is warm and when the oil is well mixed in order to ensure that the sample is representative of the oil in the final drive.

Obtain the S·O·S Sample

Final Drive Filler Plug

  1. Place the final drive in the position that is shown in illustration 1. Remove the filler plug in order to obtain a sample of the oil.

  1. Use a 1U-5758 Vacuum Pump in order to obtain an S·O·S sample from the final drive.

  1. Clean the filler plug and install the filler plug.

The recommended oil change interval is every 2000 hours. The recommended interval for oil samples is every 250 hours. The oil type is TDTO . Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "S·O·S Oil Analysis" .

To avoid contamination of the oil samples, the tools and the supplies that are used for obtaining oil samples must be clean.

Refer to Special Publication, PEHP6001 for more information on obtaining a good oil sample. Consult your Caterpillar dealer for complete information and assistance in establishing an S·O·S program for your machine.
