Cooling System Level - Check

Usage:

65E 6GS

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali.

At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.

Remove cooling system pressure cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and cooling system pressure cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Do not attempt to tighten hose connections when the coolant is hot, the hose can come off causing burns.

Cooling System Coolant Additive contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE

Do not use a conventional coolant to top-off a cooling system using Extended Life Coolant.

Do not use supplemental coolant additives (SCA) other than Extender in cooling systems filled with Extended Life Coolant.

See the appropriate topics in your machine's Operation and Maintenance Manual for all cooling system requirements.

This machine uses a coolant recovery bottle that is similar to the coolant recovery bottles that are used in automotive applications. Once the engine is turned off and the coolant is cold, the coolant should be visible in the coolant recovery bottle.

If the engine coolant level is low, check the system for leaks. As needed, repair the cooling system. Use the following procedure in order to add coolant.

  1. Park the machine on a hard, level surface. Allow the engine to cool and allow the radiator to cool.

  1. Slowly loosen the filler cap in order to relieve the pressure. Remove the filler cap.

  1. Inspect the filler cap gasket. Replace the filler cap if the gasket is damaged.

  1. As needed, add coolant. Maintain the coolant level to the bottom of the filler pipe.

  1. Install the filler cap.
